{"id":49206,"date":"2018-02-05T15:57:56","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T20:57:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=49206"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:56:08","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:56:08","slug":"mcphee-millennial-families-include-fewer-kids-but-more-pets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/02\/mcphee-millennial-families-include-fewer-kids-but-more-pets\/","title":{"rendered":"McPHEE: Millennial families include fewer kids, but more pets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deborah McPhee, an Associate Professor of Human Resources Management and Occupational Health and Safety in the Goodman School of Business, wrote a piece <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/when-fluffy-wants-mommy-the-growing-demand-for-pet-friendly-workplaces-90428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently published in The Conversation<\/a> about the need for employers to attract and retain millennials by catering to their increased level of pet ownership.<\/p>\n<p>McPhee writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>The times, they are a-changin\u2019 when it comes to families.\u00a0<\/em><em>No longer is the traditional family configuration a mom, a dad, 2.4 kids and a pet.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So what\u2019s happening?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There appears to be a trend towards men and women delaying marriage. Millennial women in their 20s and 30s have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2014\/03\/07\/millennials-in-adulthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decided to stay single a lot longer than women did in the past<\/a>. And instead of kids,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.millennialmarketing.com\/2017\/07\/pets-vs-parenthood-why-millennials-are-owning-pets-instead-of-having-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they have pets<\/a>.
