{"id":49203,"date":"2018-02-05T15:49:31","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T20:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=49203"},"modified":"2018-02-05T15:49:31","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T20:49:31","slug":"brock-film-series-screens-the-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/02\/brock-film-series-screens-the-square\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock Film Series screens The Square"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock University Film Series continues this week with <em>The Square<\/em>, which won the top prize at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and is nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Square, <\/em>from\u00a0Swedish director Ruben \u00d6stlund is a no-holds-barred send-up of the contemporary art world. The film is both sprawling and ambitious, and pointed and piquant, and it takes aim on the nexus of sex, money and overblown, self-consciously provocative aesthetics that fuels the global art market.<\/p>\n<p>As David Sims commented in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, <em>The Square<\/em> is a \u201cdarkly amusing\u201d comedy, but one that is also &#8220;bracingly honest in its absurdity,&#8221; and all the more remarkable because of it. The film stars Elisabeth Moss (<em>Mad Men<\/em>, <em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em>) and Dominic West (<em>The Wire<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>For more than 40 years, the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film has hosted Brock\u2019s film series to bring some of the best in international, independent and Canadian cinema to St. Catharines. Films, all selected from the TIFF circuit, screen most Wednesdays until April 4 at the Pen Centre\u2019s Landmark Cinemas.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for each screening are $10 for adults and $5 for Brock students and can be purchased in the lobby of Landmark Cinemas each Wednesday night. Season tickets are also available.
