{"id":49195,"date":"2018-02-05T15:59:55","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T20:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=49195"},"modified":"2018-02-08T10:16:31","modified_gmt":"2018-02-08T15:16:31","slug":"new-brock-research-measures-impact-of-sporting-events-on-niagara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/02\/new-brock-research-measures-impact-of-sporting-events-on-niagara\/","title":{"rendered":"New Brock research measures impact of sporting events on Niagara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How do you measure the impact of a sporting event?<\/p>\n<p>The usual way is to concentrate on the economics: calculate the event\u2019s direct and indirect costs and revenues for the site and surrounding community.<\/p>\n<p>But new Brock University research calls that view too limiting and instead encourages a \u201ctriple bottom-line approach\u201d when assessing a sport event\u2019s impact on a community.<\/p>\n<p>The latest policy brief by the Niagara Community Observatory (NCO) assesses not only the financial impact of large and small sporting events on the region, but an expanded way of calculating overall value, as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s growing debate about what the true impact of a sport event, especially a large-scale sport event, can have on a community,\u201d says Julie Stevens, co-author of the brief and director of Brock\u2019s Centre for Sport Capacity, which partnered with the NCO to produce the brief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say it falls within two categories: one is the traditional assessment that estimates economic activity generated by the event,\u201d she says. \u201cThe second is a new, comprehensive approach that captures economic, social and environmental impact as perceived by event attendees and community members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Sport Capacity and the NCO will be launching the policy brief Wednesday, Feb. 7 at an event that will include a panel discussion with the brief authors, along with Sue Morin<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>Business Development Manager,\u00a0Venture Niagara, and\u00a0early promoter of the\u00a0Welland Sport Tourism Alliance, and Niagara Regional Councillor Tim Rigby, Co-chair of the 2015 PanAm Games rowing competition and Co-chair of the 1999 World Rowing Championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis brief is a conversation starter,\u201d says NCO Director Charles Conteh. \u201cIt is about re-thinking our measurement of the impact of sport.
