{"id":49094,"date":"2018-01-29T16:23:39","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T21:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=49094"},"modified":"2018-02-13T15:33:44","modified_gmt":"2018-02-13T20:33:44","slug":"black-history-month-at-brock-to-focus-on-african-women-in-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/01\/black-history-month-at-brock-to-focus-on-african-women-in-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month at Brock to focus on African women in history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University will mark Black History Month with a series of community events, including several meant to shine light on the contributions of African women in history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Displays, interactive workshops, panel discussions and film screenings \u2014 many of them open to the public \u2014 will take place throughout February, both on and off campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe organize these events in the spirit of equity,\u201d said Jean Ntakirutimana, Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. \u201cIt\u2019s a matter of highlighting diversity and inclusion, which is also a part of Brock\u2019s mission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ntakirutimana stressed the importance of recognizing African Heritage Month, as it is also known, and acknowledging the accomplishments and struggles of black members of society throughout history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople of African descent have played an important role in the history of Canada and of the world,\u201d he said, adding the month-long designation provides an educational opportunity to share those stories with the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niagara is no exception, Ntakirutimana said, with people of African descent shaping the region\u2019s history through their involvement in the Underground Railroad, building the Welland Canal and the War of 1812, among many others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special emphasis for this year\u2019s Brock events has been placed on African women in history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat aspect is often forgotten,\u201d Ntakirutimana said. \u201cThese feminine figures have played an important role in the history of humanity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University is working in partnership with SOFIFRAN, an organization that aids French-speaking immigrant women who have settled in Niagara, on several events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of some of the events being held to mark Black History Month. Closed event.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s Talk About Black Love: Held Wednesday, Feb. 14 in the Student Justice Centre, the workshop includes a short presentation followed by an open discussion about stereotypes and expectations related to black love and interracial dating, among other topics.
