{"id":48904,"date":"2018-01-18T09:35:23","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T14:35:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48904"},"modified":"2018-01-18T16:39:37","modified_gmt":"2018-01-18T21:39:37","slug":"alternative-reading-week-spaces-still-available","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/01\/alternative-reading-week-spaces-still-available\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternative Reading Week spaces still available"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University students looking to head south during Reading Week have an opportunity to help others while escaping Niagara\u2019s chilly temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Each February, the University\u2019s Alternative Reading Week program sends a group of students to assist with a Habitat for Humanity building project in Sumter, S.C. With this year\u2019s trip just around the corner, there are still spaces left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure students are aware that the opportunity to participate this year still exists,\u201d said Kristen Smith, Brock\u2019s Manager of Community Outreach Programs.<\/p>\n<p>The trip costs $850 and includes all accommodation, transportation and meals for the week away.<\/p>\n<p>For Smith, the ability to help out those in need during the weeklong break is something that sets the trip apart from a more traditional Reading Week experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach year, our students make valuable connections with members of the Sumter community and return with new perspectives as well as a greater awareness of how to build community going forward,\u201d she said. \u201cThey learn so much in a week and form friendships based on completing a common goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Sumter trip, there is also an Alternative Reading Week trip heading to Peru that has already sold out.
