{"id":48851,"date":"2018-01-15T11:29:50","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T16:29:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48851"},"modified":"2018-01-15T14:50:46","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T19:50:46","slug":"grads-cancer-research-continues-in-the-u-k-at-university-of-cambridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/01\/grads-cancer-research-continues-in-the-u-k-at-university-of-cambridge\/","title":{"rendered":"Grad&#8217;s cancer research continues in the U.K. at University of Cambridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research that began in Brock University\u2019s labs has taken Lucas Maddalena (BSc \u201912, MSc \u201917) nearly 6,000 kilometres across the Atlantic to one of the world\u2019s most renowned institutions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Biological Sciences grad crossed the pond this past fall in order to walk the hallowed halls of the University of Cambridge, where he has accepted a prestigious $300,000 scholarship to complete his PhD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he learned of the coveted opportunity, which supports continued cancer research at the U.K. institution, Maddalena knew competition would be fierce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He began a rigorous application process in the winter of 2016, which led to several interviews and left him waiting on the edge of his seat for a decision from the panel responsible for the selection.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48853\" style=\"width: 438px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48853\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-48853\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Lucas-Maddalena-2-RS-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Lucas Maddalena\" width=\"428\" height=\"285\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-48853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">During his time at Brock University, Lucas Maddalena could often be found working away in the labs within the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was agonizing waiting to hear,\u201d he said of the sheer anticipation, which ultimately led to the life-changing news. \u201cYou go over every interview question in your head \u2014 how could I have answered them better? Should I have said something different?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the arrival of summer came the good news, Maddalena had received his formal acceptance to Cambridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Thorold native was the only overseas recipient of the Cancer Research U.K. Cambridge Centre 2017 Non-clinical PhD Studentship Award, of which five were awarded in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He began his studies at the historic school in October.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scholarship covers three years of study, the typical length of a PhD program at Cambridge, and will support the costs of Maddalena\u2019s research, as well as his living expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s surreal. That\u2019s probably the best word to describe it,\u201d he said of this new chapter in his life, which has him researching within Cambridge\u2019s Department of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m very proud that I took a shot at it and was ultimately successful, and I\u2019m extremely thankful for the many people that helped and supported me along the way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maddalena is working under the joint supervision of Professor Margaret Ashcroft, Department of Medicine, and Dr. Christian Frezza, Medical Research Council Cancer Unit, Hutchison Medical Research Council Research Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His research continues the theme of his master\u2019s work, which explored mitochondrial function and oxygen usage in the context of health and disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m studying two gene mutations for two mitochondrial proteins that are involved in some metabolic functions. These two mutations are found in select forms of cancer and different tumours, including certain forms of renal cancer,\u201d Maddalena said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two mutations lead to a pseudo-hypoxic state for the cell, making the cell think it\u2019s deprived of oxygen, which causes the cell to rewire its metabolism to be more anaerobic, surviving without the presence of air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat rewiring event is being increasingly recognized as a key hallmark in all cancers,\u201d Maddalena said. \u201cI\u2019m going to be looking at the molecular mechanisms that underlie that pseudo-hypoxic state in cancer cells.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through this project, Maddalena hopes to uncover key details in relevant forms of cancer, with a specific focus on renal cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ideal goal is that this will help improve our understanding of that disease process,\u201d he said. \u201cThe hope is to contribute ultimately to better treatments of the disease. It could have implications for the diagnoses of these diseases as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maddalena credits the support of his Brock supervisors, Biological Sciences Associate Professor Jeff Stuart, whom he worked closely with during his time at the University, and Professor Jeffrey Atkinson in Chemistry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wouldn\u2019t be where I am today without my experience at Brock,\u201d he said. \u201cHaving such a great relationship with my supervisors has been important for me, allowing me to keep growing as a student.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small class sizes provided Maddalena the opportunity to \u201cbe more hands on and to really take advantage of the resources available here,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrock has been a major part of my life. I\u2019m really proud to say I\u2019m from Brock and to share that with people wherever I go.
