{"id":48825,"date":"2018-01-12T14:39:36","date_gmt":"2018-01-12T19:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48825"},"modified":"2018-01-12T14:40:21","modified_gmt":"2018-01-12T19:40:21","slug":"goodman-mba-students-shine-at-international-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/01\/goodman-mba-students-shine-at-international-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodman MBA students shine at international competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MBA students from Brock\u2019s Goodman School of Business made their mark on an international stage last week, advancing to the semifinal round at the prestigious John Molson MBA International Case Competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team, comprised of MBA students Carson Bender, Braden Day, Ashwani Janagam and Pulkit Modi, was one of only four Canadian business school teams to make the semifinals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosted by the John Molson School of Business in Montreal, the competition attracted MBA students from 36 business schools and 19 countries and took place over an intense six days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the competition held in a round-robin format, the Goodman team confronted each of the other teams in their division once through a strictly timed case analysis presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They had up to three hours to prepare for each of the five cases they faced before presenting a detailed recommendation to a judging panel of business executives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each time the Goodman team completed a case, they racked up more points and moved up a notch in the division ranking, quickly showing that they had the business acumen and knack for presentations to be successful onstage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bender describes the experience as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete, network and learn at the country\u2019s largest MBA competition. The practical learning offered by Goodman is part of the reason why the Calgary native chose to come to Brock. He intends to earn an MBA and steer his career towards business after completing a Bachelor of Science degree in oil and gas engineering from the University of Calgary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bender and his team were beaming when they learned the Goodman team was among nine business schools selected to faceoff in the competition\u2019s semifinal round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe won both of our cases on the second day against two very strong teams, so we had a good feeling about the semifinal round,\u201d he said. \u201cWe had a short-lived celebration before we had to get to work on the next case.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to their ability to work well together, Bender says the team was set up for success by Goodman\u2019s MBA classes and their faculty coaches, Associate Professor of Marketing Eric Dolansky and Accounting Lecturer Norman Chasse, who mentored and practised with them throughout the whole process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being edged out of the top three spots before reaching the finals, the Goodman team was proud of its showing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodman School of Business Dean Andrew Gaudes says the team\u2019s success is another example of the development and advancement of students across all of Goodman\u2019s programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled with where the students landed in the competition,\u201d he said. \u201cThe fact that they were one of four Canadian business schools in semifinal round speaks volumes to their preparedness and their motivation to contribute and move the dial in the workplace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MBA students from Brock\u2019s Goodman School of Business made their mark on an international stage last week, advancing to the semifinal round at the prestigious John Molson MBA International Case Competition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":48827,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[39,7,1,4],"tags":[594,6174],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/48825"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/22"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=48825"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/48825\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":48829,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/48825\/revisions\/48829"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/48827"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=48825"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=48825"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=48825"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
