{"id":48805,"date":"2018-01-11T09:16:01","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T14:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48805"},"modified":"2018-07-16T15:43:12","modified_gmt":"2018-07-16T19:43:12","slug":"the-power-of-photovoice-research-method-the-focus-of-metis-scholar-talk-at-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/01\/the-power-of-photovoice-research-method-the-focus-of-metis-scholar-talk-at-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"The power of photovoice research method the focus of M\u00e9tis scholar talk at Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A picture is worth a thousand words \u2014 especially if it gives a voice to someone who might not be heard otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Henry, Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary, is speaking at Brock University Monday, Jan. 15 to share his experience of how photography and photovoice methods have shaped his research on Indigenous street gangs.<\/p>\n<p>Photovoice is becoming a frequently used research method that engages research participants by having them document their experiences from their own perspectives through photographs.<\/p>\n<p>A M\u00e9tis scholar originally from Prince Albert, Sask., Henry uses photovoice to explore the ways in which Indigenous men and women engage in street lifestyles, where, as he describes it, \u201cthe street gang becomes a site of\u00a0survivance, challenging settler colonialism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotovoice is a grassroots approach to photography that empowers participants to share information and tell their stories through pictures,\u201d says Nicole Goodman, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and organizer of the speaker series in which Henry will present.<\/p>\n<p>Goodman says there are many benefits to this type of research method, ranging from increased awareness and reflection for participants to possible policy influence and change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impacts and benefits are bigger than those that often result from traditional social science research methods, which typically solely benefit the agenda of the researcher,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Henry, whose research areas also include Indigenous masculinities, Indigenous and critical research methodologies, and youth mental health, frequently works closely with community partners.
