{"id":48802,"date":"2018-01-11T14:51:30","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T19:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48802"},"modified":"2018-01-11T20:22:31","modified_gmt":"2018-01-12T01:22:31","slug":"new-vp-research-aiming-to-build-brocks-momentum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/01\/new-vp-research-aiming-to-build-brocks-momentum\/","title":{"rendered":"New VP, Research aiming to build Brock\u2019s momentum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was Brock\u2019s reputation as an ambitious university striving to reach its next level of research excellence that drew Tim Kenyon\u2019s interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/brock-has-an-eye-on-the-future-with-its-next-vice-president-research\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the new Vice-President, Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kenyon has confirmed what his instincts previously told him: that Brock is \u201can institution poised to do great things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrock has been committed to increased research intensity and declared itself as a comprehensive university some years ago,\u201d he said the week following his Jan. 1 appointment. \u201cIt has been making real strides to make that a reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kenyon joined Brock from the academic ranks at the University of Waterloo, where he most recently served as a Philosophy professor and the Associate Dean of Arts (Research).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his new role, Kenyon is looking forward to being a part of Brock\u2019s continued upward trajectory, providing support to colleagues and helping to ensure their dynamic, comprehensive research is being properly celebrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are researchers, professors and graduate students, among others, doing scholarship and research at Brock that really is excellent,\u201d he said. \u201cThat work is making a huge difference within academic disciplines; it\u2019s also having extraordinary impact beyond the academic sphere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognition of those contributions is critical because it provides colleagues a \u201cshared understanding of what a big difference they\u2019re making in the world,\u201d Kenyon said. \u201cThat keeps everyone\u2019s spirits elevated and keeps them focused on the value of their work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, this recognition also plays a pivotal role in showcasing to stakeholders, funders, government agencies and community members the significance and strength of the research underway at the University, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt helps them commit to supporting and sustaining research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want to make sure that the world, the country, the province, and the region know about the great research that\u2019s happening at Brock.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kenyon said the University was \u201cextraordinarily well served\u201d by his predecessor, Joffre Mercier, who led the University\u2019s research administration on an interim basis for 16 months before a permanent replacement was found. Mercier previously held the Associate Vice-President, Research role prior to taking on the interim position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe did a great job, and without the support of an Associate Vice-President, Research \u2014 that\u2019s incredibly difficult,\u201d Kenyon said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the reins now passed on and work underway to create a sense of continuity in the University\u2019s research realm, Kenyon is looking forward to being part of a \u201cmore strategic environmental scan that says where we are now, where we want to be and what it\u2019s going to take to get there,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s something the University as a whole has to decide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to his administration work at Brock, Kenyon intends to continue his own research at the University. A philosopher of language who has written a widely-used critical thinking textbook, Kenyon\u2019s current research takes language pragmatics, and insights from cognitive and social psychology, and applies them to problems in social epistemology and in critical thinking pedagogy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He believes having experience both as a researcher and in research administration is a big part of providing successful leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have never been a researcher, you\u2019ve never been faced with questions like: How do I apply for grants? How do I collaborate with and mentor colleagues? How do I support graduate students? How do I balance the research, teaching and service components of my career?\u201d he said. \u201cWithout that experience, it would be too easy to miss the heart of the university research experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Splitting his PhD studies in Philosophy between the University of St. Andrews and Western University, Kenyon received his degree in 1998, and began his career first at Aberdeen University, and then at the University of Waterloo in 2000 as an assistant professor. By 2006, he had begun a six-year run as Chair of the Philosophy Department.
