{"id":48290,"date":"2017-12-05T17:28:06","date_gmt":"2017-12-05T22:28:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48290"},"modified":"2017-12-05T17:28:06","modified_gmt":"2017-12-05T22:28:06","slug":"rodman-hall-exhibition-wins-big-at-oaag-gala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/12\/rodman-hall-exhibition-wins-big-at-oaag-gala\/","title":{"rendered":"Rodman Hall exhibition wins big at OAAG gala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grass is definitely greener for local artist Elizabeth Chitty after winning a prestigious award for her recent Rodman Hall exhibit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chitty\u2019s exhibition, The Grass is Still Green, won Exhibit of the Year (Under $10,000) at the Ontario Association of Art Galleries\u2019 (OAAG) annual awards gala Nov. 27.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her show, curated by Marcie Bronson and presented at Rodman Hall from June to August 2016, explored ideas of place, land ownership, governance and treaties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a response to the Two Row Wampum, the 1613 agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Europeans, Chitty involved local students and volunteers in planting a garden of purple and white alyssum.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48291\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48291\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-48291\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Elizabeth-Chitty-planting-1050x703.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"228\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-48291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elizabeth Chitty, centre, worked with local students and volunteers to install her exhibition, The Grass is Still Green, in the summer of 2016. Her exhibition at Rodman Hall won Exhibit of the Year (Under $10,000) at this year\u2019s OAAG awards gala.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Two Row Wampum outlined a commitment of friendship, peace between people and living lives in parallel forever \u2014 as long as the grass is green, rivers flow downhill, and the sun rises in the east.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A white stone path through the middle of Chitty\u2019s installation invited visitors to walk in contemplation of each person\u2019s role in honouring the Two Row Wampum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside Rodman Hall, Chitty employed digitally manipulated archival photos and video to illustrate the treaty as a promise that must be honoured, embodied and lived.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cElizabeth Chitty\u2019s exhibition, The Grass is Still Green, was a site-specific response to the Two Row Wampum that affirmed this treaty in a local context,\u201d says Bronson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHer exhibition illustrates how Rodman Hall\u2019s programming engages with national issues on a local level and provides significant opportunities for local artists to exhibit and create new work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition, Chitty\u2019s first solo show at Rodman Hall, also responded to the history of the Rodman Hall site and the touring exhibition <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading the Talk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The show engaged with the local community, with Chitty working with local youth and with artist Keesic Douglas hosted a public dialogue that explored the role of the artist in reconciliation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe accompanying youth program, which engaged youth from Western Hill, Haudenosaunee and recent settler communities, reflects the gallery\u2019s role as an agent of social change, facilitating community connections through contemporary art exhibitions and related programs,\u201d Bronson says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual OAAG awards recognize excellence in arts institutions and individuals in the public art gallery sector across Ontario by celebrating gallery professionals and artists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chitty\u2019s exhibition was one of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/rodman-exhibitions-shortlisted-for-provincial-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two Rodman Hall exhibitions up for awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week.
