{"id":48265,"date":"2017-12-05T17:31:04","date_gmt":"2017-12-05T22:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48265"},"modified":"2026-04-28T17:38:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T21:38:12","slug":"lithium-in-water-associated-with-slower-rate-of-alzheimers-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/12\/lithium-in-water-associated-with-slower-rate-of-alzheimers-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"Lithium in water associated with slower rate of Alzheimer\u2019s disease deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trace elements of lithium in drinking water can slow death rates from Alzheimer\u2019s disease, Brock University research has found.<\/p>\n<p>Rates of diabetes and obesity, which are important risk factors for Alzheimer\u2019s disease, also decrease if there is a particular amount of lithium in the water, says the study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29103043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published recently in the <em>Journal of Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Postdoctoral fellow Val Fajardo and Rebecca MacPherson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Sciences, collected statistics on various lithium levels in drinking water in 234 counties across Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Lithium is a water-soluble alkali metal found in igneous rocks and mineral springs. It is commonly used to treat bipolar and other mood disorders, but at much higher doses than what occurs naturally in drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>The research team, which included Associate Professor of Health Sciences Paul LeBlanc, compared lithium levels naturally found in tap water with Alzheimer\u2019s disease mortality rates, along with the incidence of obesity and diabetes, in the Texas counties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found counties that had above the median level of lithium in tap water (40 micrograms per litre) experienced less increases in Alzheimer\u2019s disease mortality over time, whereas counties below that median level had even higher increases in Alzheimer\u2019s deaths over time,\u201d says Fajardo.<\/p>\n<p>The frequency of obesity and Type 2 diabetes also went down when the drinking water contained similar lithium levels, the researchers found.<\/p>\n<p>Fajardo says he and his team focused on Texas because data on lithium levels were \u201cfreely available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies have demonstrated lithium\u2019s ability to protect against Alzheimer\u2019s disease, obesity and diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we are one of the first groups to show that lithium\u2019s potential protective effect against Alzheimer\u2019s disease, obesity and diabetes may translate to the population setting through very low levels of lithium in tap water,\u201d says Fajardo.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock research comes on the heels of an August <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/science\/2017\/08\/23\/adding-lithium-tap-water-could-prevent-thousands-dementia-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study from the University of Copenhagen<\/a> linking high lithium levels in drinking water to decreases in dementia rates.<\/p>\n<p>But Fajardo warns it\u2019s too early to start advising authorities to add lithium to drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so much more research we have to do before policy makers look at the evidence and say, Ok, let\u2019s start supplementing tap water with lithium just like we do in some municipalities with fluoride to prevent tooth decay,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Fajardo, who came to Brock from the University of Waterloo, specializes in how a protein called GSK-3 affects skeletal muscles. GSK-3 is involved in dozens of signaling pathways that control cell growth, migration, glucose regulation and cell death.<\/p>\n<p>But GSK-3 has also been implicated in a number of diseases including Alzheimer\u2019s disease, diabetes and cancer.<\/p>\n<p>As he studied the protein, Fajardo learned that lithium inhibits the function of GSK-3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies have shown that trace levels of lithium can improve mental health and reduce rates of suicide, homicide and violent crimes,\u201d says Fajardo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on what I knew about GSK-3 in skeletal muscle and its potential impact on whole-body metabolism, I was thinking that maybe trace levels of lithium in tap water could also potentially reduce the prevalence of obesity and diabetes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He says he teamed up with MacPherson, who researches Alzheimer\u2019s disease, when he saw how lithium could have \u201cneuroprotective effects on Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacPherson says that, in the brain, GSK-3 is associated with another protein called tau. Tau damages brain cells essential for learning and memory and causes the brain to develop structures called tangles.<\/p>\n<p>GSK-3 is also involved in the formation of another structure in the brain called plaques.
