{"id":48254,"date":"2017-12-04T09:38:16","date_gmt":"2017-12-04T14:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48254"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:56:09","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:56:09","slug":"burton-does-trudeau-really-believe-trade-with-china-is-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/12\/burton-does-trudeau-really-believe-trade-with-china-is-free\/","title":{"rendered":"BURTON: Does Trudeau really believe trade with China is \u2018free\u2019?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Burton, an associate professor of Political Science at Brock, wrote a piece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/does-trudeau-really-believe-trade-with-china-is-free\/article37166201\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently published in the Globe and Mail<\/a> about Justin Trudeau&#8217;s visit to China and impending trade talks.<\/p>\n<p>Burton writes:<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text\"><em>Last Sunday afternoon, while Canadians settled in for the Grey Cup game, the Prime Minister&#8217;s Office announced that Justin Trudeau will fly to Beijing this weekend for talks about &#8220;a progressive trade agenda&#8221; as well as &#8220;frank dialogue on human rights issues like good governance, freedom of speech and the rule of law.&#8221; Frank dialogue on human rights? The federal Liberals are dreaming if they think skeptical Canadians will buy the official line on Mr. Trudeau&#8217;s sudden visit to China.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text\"><em>Beijing has made clear it will not abide aspirations of a &#8220;progressive trade agenda.&#8221; Inserting clauses on human rights, the environment or regulatory transparency into free-trade talks is a non-starter. This regime demands that Canadian companies operating in China transfer technology and intellectual-property rights to their Chinese state partners. A free-trade agreement (FTA) won&#8217;t change that. No such &#8220;progressive&#8221; conditions appear in FTAs with New Zealand or Australia.
