{"id":48242,"date":"2017-12-04T15:49:41","date_gmt":"2017-12-04T20:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48242"},"modified":"2017-12-04T15:50:41","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T20:50:41","slug":"canadian-adventurer-to-speak-at-brock-thursday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/12\/canadian-adventurer-to-speak-at-brock-thursday\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian adventurer to speak at Brock Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"p2 page-intro dropcap\"><span class=\"s1\">When modern-day voyageur Adam Shoalts (BA \u201909) returns to his alma mater later this week, he will bring along stories from an epic adventure to share with the hundreds of people expected to attend.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The Brock History graduate will tell the tale of his recent four-month journey across the Canadian Arctic during a talk held at the University Thursday, Dec. 7.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The amazing one-man expedition had Shoalts walk and canoe an incredible 4,000 kilometres across the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut \u2014 from the Alaska border to Hudson Bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;I&#8217;m excited to have the chance to share the story of my Arctic journey with a local audience,\u201d said the 31-year-old Pelham native. \u201cIt will be a lot of fun to be back at the University. I know a lot of people in the Brock and Niagara communities followed my expedition&#8217;s progress across the Arctic, so it&#8217;s great to now have the chance to share that adventure with them.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">More than 200 people are expected to attend the event to hear Shoalts relive his experience and to see photos of the curious wildlife and challenging terrain he encountered along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAdam was always drawn to nature, the north and imagining Canada on a big canvas,\u201d said Daniel Samson, Associate Professor and Chair of Brock\u2019s Department of History who taught Shoalts during his time at the University. \u201cHe was drawn to environmental history and Canada&#8217;s colonial era. As an adventurer, he brings all that together, tracing the routes of indigenous, British and French fur traders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Associate Professor of History Michael Driedger was hopeful students in the crowd would draw inspiration from Shoalts\u2019 unconventional path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe History department has an active and talented group of alumni,\u201d he said. \u201cSince graduating, they\u2019ve become entrepreneurs, teachers, librarians and lawyers. But I can\u2019t think of anyone who\u2019s applied a Brock University history education in such an adventurous way as Adam Shoalts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHis curiosity and creativity are exactly the kinds of traits that we want all of our students to cultivate \u2014 even if they don\u2019t go to the Arctic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Alone Across Canada\u2019s Arctic will take place Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. in Brock\u2019s Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre. The event is co-sponsored by Brock University and the Department of History.
