{"id":48202,"date":"2017-12-03T00:40:58","date_gmt":"2017-12-03T05:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48202"},"modified":"2017-12-04T08:07:13","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T13:07:13","slug":"canadas-top-two-varsity-mens-basketball-teams-put-on-a-thriller-downtown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/12\/canadas-top-two-varsity-mens-basketball-teams-put-on-a-thriller-downtown\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s top two varsity men\u2019s basketball teams put on a thriller downtown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To head coach Charles Kissi a loss is a loss, but when it\u2019s an overtime loss to the seven-time defending national champions, it\u2019s hard to be too upset.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday night\u2019s clash of the titans between the first-ranked Carleton Ravens and second-ranked Brock Badgers lived up to the hype as a packed house of 3,296 boisterous fans at the Meridian Centre in downtown St. Catharines were treated to an absolute thriller of a varsity men\u2019s basketball game.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48212\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/BrockCarleton3-1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48212\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-seenandheard wp-image-48212\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/BrockCarleton3-1-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock forward Godsman Kwakwah.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When the dust settled, Carleton had won the game 80-75 in overtime, but the fourth quarter had more plot twists than a primetime drama. It also put the Canadian basketball scene on notice that the Badgers have the depth and talent to take on the country\u2019s best varsity teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you saw it that we\u2019re right there. We just have to make less mistakes,\u201d Kissi said after the game. \u201cThey\u2019re human. (Carleton) has had an incredible run with an incredible coach, but they\u2019re human. They put their pants on one leg at a time like everyone else and you have to approach the game that way. If you go into a game thinking you\u2019re going to lose, then you\u2019re going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock, which drops to 9-2 after also losing to Ottawa Friday, was led by fourth-year forward Cassidy Ryan, who was on fire in the first quarter with eight points and finished the night with 20.<\/p>\n<p>The Ravens improve to 10-0, but it\u2019s the first game in the Ontario University Athletics season which they\u2019ve won by fewer than 14 points, and the first time a team has pushed them to overtime this year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48206\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/BrockCarleton4.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48206\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-seenandheard wp-image-48206\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/BrockCarleton4-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock men&#8217;s basketball head coach Charles Kissi talks to his players late in the game Saturday, Dec. 3.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That, however, was no consolation to Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a loss. I\u2019m not satisfied with that,\u201d he said. \u201cI think we played pretty well, but we made a lot of mistakes down the stretch, which cost us the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock was down 19-14 after the first quarter and 39-31 at the half, but the home side came out flying in the third quarter \u2014 outscoring the Ravens 19-14 to shrink the lead to three points.<\/p>\n<p>Brock again outscored Carleton in the fourth quarter, this time taking the lead for the first time in the game early in the frame, and eventually opening the gap to six points \u2014 sending the crowd into a full-on frenzy.<\/p>\n<p>But the Ravens fought back to tie it at 66-66, sending the game to overtime where the guests outscored Brock 14-9 for the 80-75 win. Behind Ryan, Dani Elgadi had 16 points for Brock, Daniel Cayer had 11 and Johneil Simpson had 10. Yasliin Joseph led Carleton with 17.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel really good about how good we are, I just think to try and get to the next level, we have to make less mistakes,\u201d Kissi said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48204\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/BrockCarleton2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48204\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-seenandheard wp-image-48204\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/BrockCarleton2-300x261.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kristen Gallant of the Brock Badgers looks for someone to pass to as she\u2019s guarded by Cynthia Dupont of the Carleton Ravens.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side of Saturday night\u2019s basketball doubleheader, the Badgers got off to a great start, but didn\u2019t have an answer for the powerful Carleton shooters and lost 60-41 decision.<\/p>\n<p>It drops Brock to 4-7 while extending the Ravens\u2019 undefeated record to 10-0.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re so young and being consistent is a struggle,\u201d Badgers head coach Ashley McSporran said. \u201cCarleton is a beast so holding them to 60 points is a small victory. They\u2019re learning and I\u2019m being patient with them because I believe in them. I\u2019m asking them to do things that are a little outside of their comfort zone. They continued to extend the lead in the second half, going up 43-28 after three quarters en route to the win. Kristin Gallant and Baelie Campbell were the top scores for Brock with nine and eight points, respectively. Heather Lindsay led Carleton with 15.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell said the atmosphere in the Meridian Centre helped, but that her team needs to perform regardless of where they play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur team really feeds off the energy our fans give us,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it\u2019s just a matter of us executing better. That comes with time. We\u2019re a young team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the game Saturday night, Brock honoured the Badgers men\u2019s basketball team that won a national championship in 2008. After playing an alumni game earlier in the day, the players from that title-winning team took in the Brock-Carleton games.<\/p>\n<p>For Mike Kemp, seeing more than 3,200 fans packing the Meridian Centre to watch a Brock basketball game was a very good sign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see the program where it is now \u2014 because it struggled for a little bit \u2014 Brock Basketball is in the best place it\u2019s been since we were there,\u201d said Kemp. \u201cAnd I would argue that this team is a lot more talented than we were in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one thing we had over every team in the country is we all grew up together.
