{"id":48152,"date":"2017-11-30T16:00:32","date_gmt":"2017-11-30T21:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48152"},"modified":"2018-05-24T16:14:37","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T20:14:37","slug":"experts-to-shed-light-on-open-educational-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/experts-to-shed-light-on-open-educational-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts to shed light on Open Educational Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of Canada\u2019s leading advocates for greater access and affordability of teaching and learning materials\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be at Brock Thursday, Dec. 7 to speak during a half-day event focused on Open Educational Resources (OER).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thatpsychprof.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajiv Jhangiani<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, University Teaching Fellow in Open Studies and a Psychology Professor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Vancouver, B.C., and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecampusontario.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Porter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CEO of eCampusOntario, will be guest speakers at this free event that will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock community is invited to reserve free tickets on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cpi.brocku.ca\/events\/node\/1107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centre for Pedagogical Innovation\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The event was made possible through a partnership between CPI, the Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) and James A. Gibson Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OER Teaching and Learning program will feature a student panel discussion about OER and short presentations from several Brock faculty members about their experiences and insights in creating, adopting and adapting open educational resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jhangiani will share a passionate and inspiring viewpoint about the philosophy and practice of affordable education, transparent science and assessable scholarship. His most recent book, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open: The Philosophy and Practices that are Revolutionizing Education and Science<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2017), features the stories, motives, insights and practical tips from global leaders in the open movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porter will talk about the role of eCampusOntario as a leader in the province for excellence in open education. The organization offers a variety of online educational tools and resources to learners and post-secondary institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to his eCampusOntario appointment in 2016, Porter was the associate vice-president of education support and innovation at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nadia Bathish, BUSU Vice-President, External Affairs, says it\u2019s particularly important for students to support OER initiatives. BUSU will continue to promote OER awareness in January as part of a campaign led by the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents have much to gain from OER in terms of accessibility, affordability and quality of post-secondary education,\u201d she says. \u201cFor example, eCampusOntario has an open library that provides students and faculty access to nearly 200 textbooks and resources that can be downloaded for free. When you consider the cost of textbooks, this has a huge potential for real savings to students.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term Open Educational Resources was first introduced at a conference hosted by UNESCO in 2000 and was promoted in the context of providing free access to educational resources on a global scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe collaborative nature of this event speaks to the ways in which OERs benefit multiple stakeholders,\u201d says University Librarian Mark Robertson. \u201cWe hope to raise awareness of the tools, technologies and resources that are available to faculty.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s James A. Gibson Library offers a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/researchguides.library.brocku.ca\/OER\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set of OER guides on its website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which defines OER as &#8220;\u2026any educational resources (including curriculum maps, course materials, textbooks, streaming videos, multimedia applications, podcasts and any other materials that have been designed for use in teaching and learning) that are openly available for use by educators and students, without an accompanying need to pay royalties or licence fees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are thrilled to have both Rajiv Jhangiani and David Porter with us for our program to share their insight and knowledge from the multiple perspectives of research, teaching and administration,\u201d says CPI Director Jill Grose. \u201cThe OER movement resides within a social justice framework around equal access to high-quality education in supporting student learning, as well as reducing student financial costs.
