{"id":48009,"date":"2017-11-23T14:50:21","date_gmt":"2017-11-23T19:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=48009"},"modified":"2017-11-28T15:22:23","modified_gmt":"2017-11-28T20:22:23","slug":"give-food-clothing-toys-or-time-this-holiday-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/give-food-clothing-toys-or-time-this-holiday-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Give food, clothing, toys or time this holiday season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock has embraced the season of giving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s food, clothing, toys or time that you\u2019re looking to donate, there are many ways giving back to the Niagara community this holiday season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following is a list of fundraising initiatives, food and clothing drives, and volunteer opportunities led by the University community over the next month.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Food drives<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Brock Badgers\u2019 food drive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock Sports and Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) are combining food drive efforts this year. What started six years ago as a small food drive initiated by the men\u2019s hockey team, has expanded to include BUSU, women\u2019s hockey and men\u2019s and women\u2019s volleyball and basketball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student-athletes are encouraged to participate and help spread the word. The athletic team that raises the most food will receive additional\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/organization\/Badgers4Badgers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Badgers 4 Badgers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock University and wider Niagara communities can donate non-perishable food items at upcoming Brock Badgers athletic games:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saturday, Nov. 25 \u2014 Brock vs. Laurentian men\u2019s hockey at the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday, Nov. 26 \u2014 Brock vs. Toronto men\u2019s and women\u2019s volleyball at the Bob Davis Gym, Brock University<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saturday, Dec. 2 \u2014 Brock vs. Carleton men\u2019s and women\u2019s basketball at the Meridian Centre<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unday, Dec. 3 \u2014 Brock vs. Wilfrid Laurier women\u2019s hockey at the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donations will be directed to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.communitycarestca.ca\/food-clothing-household-donations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold food program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brockbusu.ca\/services\/food-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BUSU Food First program<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Food bins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Care food bins will be located at the Walker Sports Complex, BUSU office, Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, DeCew Residence and Arnie Lowenberger Residence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suggested non-perishable food items include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peanut butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">canned fish, meat, fruit and vegetables<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">juice boxes and large juice containers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pudding cups and apple sauce<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nut-free granola bars<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baby formula and cereal<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Brock staff or faculty are interested in hosting a bin in their office or department, please email Jocelyn Titone, <\/span><a href=\"mailto:jtitone@brocku.ca\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jtitone@brocku.ca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gingerbread house raffle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guernsey Market is raffling off a gingerbread house filled with chocolates. Tickets are $1 each. Proceeds will support BUSU\u2019s Food First program.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Clothing drives<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Swap \u2018n Drop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Life and Community Experience is hosting\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/71645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swap \u2018n Drop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thursday, Nov. 30. Brock students, faculty and staff are asked to bring in clean, gently used clothing to the Student Life Involvement Commons (MCA 204) before Nov. 30. Clothing donors can participate in the event in Market Hall by taking home one item for every item they donate. Anyone can purchase clothing pieces for $2 each. Monetary donations will be directed to BUSU\u2019s Food First program. Excess clothing will be given to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ywcaniagararegion.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YWCA Niagara Region<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Section 23, the District School Board of Niagara\u2019s classrooms for high-risk students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warmth Trees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help keep someone warm this winter. Donate new winter hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, slippers, pyjamas, socks and coats to the Warmth Trees in Walker Sports Complex and Guernsey Market. Donations will be directed to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/salvationarmystcatharines.com\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salvation Army<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Community Care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Clothing bins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts is collecting gently used clothing for<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/startmeupniagara.ca\/out-of-the-cold-schedule\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start Me Up Niagara\u2019s Out of the Cold program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and non-perishable food items for Community Care. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter coats will also be directed to the Out of the Cold program. Bins will be located in DeCew Residence and Arnie Lowenberger Residence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Toy drives<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock Campus Store is collecting unwrapped, new toys and stocking stuffers for<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.communitycarestca.ca\/adopt-an-angel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Care\u2019s Adopt an Angel program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Children\u2019s names and ages adorn the tree to help donors choose gifts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock offices and departments are encouraged to collect toys, warm clothing or money as a group. The Information Technology Services team is collecting toys and warm winter accessories that will be donated to Community Care and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/habitats-women-build-to-get-help-from-brock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habitat for Humanity Women Build<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> twelve Brock employees are involved with.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Donate time<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Holiday parades<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/candy-cane-helpers-needed-for-santa-claus-parades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candy cane helpers are needed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the Thorold Santa Claus Parade Saturday, Nov. 25 and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Christmas Parade Saturday, Dec. 9. Participants will walk alongside a holiday-themed Brock float, handing out candy canes and helping spread holiday cheer and school spirit. Visit ExperienceBU to learn more or to register to walk in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/71848\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thorold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/71850\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niagara-on-the-Lake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> parades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Holiday hosts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock International is looking for Brock students, faculty and staff interested in hosting international students over the holidays. The time invested can be as little as a couple of hours participating in a winter activity like ice skating or tobogganing or enjoying a festive dinner. A\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/72400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home for the Holidays information session<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is planned for Monday, Nov. 27 at noon in Plaza 411.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Community partners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Brock students, staff or faculty are interested in volunteering with community organizations this holiday season, Kristen Smith, Brock\u2019s Manager, Community Outreach Programs, can help connect them with community partners.
