{"id":47993,"date":"2017-11-22T16:04:05","date_gmt":"2017-11-22T21:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47993"},"modified":"2017-11-22T16:07:17","modified_gmt":"2017-11-22T21:07:17","slug":"brain-health-on-minds-at-grant-dobson-case-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/brain-health-on-minds-at-grant-dobson-case-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain health on minds at Grant Dobson Case Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A box filled with brain health products, pop-up shops with clothing and awareness materials, and branded hashtags were among the ideas pitched at Tuesday\u2019s Grant Dobson Case Competition to help spread the word about brain disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 17th annual competition focused on Millennial Minds, a membership program for people under 40 sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womensbrainhealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women\u2019s Brain Health Initiative<\/a> (WBHI). WBHI is a charitable non-profit with a mandate to provide education and fund research to combat brain diseases that affect women.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47995\" style=\"width: 356px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47995\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-47995\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Dobson-guests-1050x710.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"234\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47995\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">JoAnne Korten, left, and Lynn Posluns, right, of the Women\u2019s Brain Health Initiative, travelled to Brock to hear student pitches at the Grant Dobson Case Competition held on campus Tuesday, Nov. 21.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teams pitched their ideas for a marketing and advertising campaign for the Millennial Minds brand, with an aim to increase participation in the program and to share the message that it\u2019s never too early to start taking care of your brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case competition has been hosted annually by the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film (CPCF) since 2005, but this was the first year that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">representatives from the organization at the centre of the competition attended the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was a wonderful experience to engage with truly creative and gifted minds,\u201d said Lynn Posluns, Founder and President of WBHI. \u201cWe are thrilled to be the first non-profit organization to be the subject of study in the Grant Dobson Case Competition, and very excited to be able to observe the presentations first-hand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WBHI Executive Director JoAnne Korten echoed the sentiment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday offered an opportunity to reflect on how important the work we do is in helping these young, brilliant minds maintain their brain health as they age \u2014 and to know that they\u2019re all working to that end,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are honoured to have garnered their attention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first round of the competition, teams submitted written proposals, which were reviewed by faculty members from CPCF and the Goodman School of Business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three finalist teams were then selected to pitch their campaigns to a panel of industry experts including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Ignazi, Chief Creative Officer, Cossette<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlos Mareno, Chief Creative Officer, Cossette<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Plata, Community Investment, Sponsorship and Communication, Hydro One<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Shier, President and Partner, Naked Creative Consultancy <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lynn Fletcher, Owner of Fletcher Weir Consulting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dianne Wright, Co-founder and Partner, Strategic Evolution, Chimpanzee <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the competition, judges Peter Ignazi and Carlos Mareno presented the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/creative-directors-behind-sickkids-vs-campaign-to-speak-at-omalley-lecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terry O\u2019Malley Lecture in Marketing and Advertising<\/a> in the Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignazi and Mareno, both award-winning chief creative officers at Cossette, spoke about the SickKids Foundation\u2019s \u2018VS\u2019 campaign, which won the Grand Prix Public Service at the 2017 Strategy Awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The winners of the case competition were announced at the lecture. Students Bailey Cochrane, Olivia Poulin and previous finalist Josiah Dueck claimed the grand prize of $2,000 for their #Tellastranger #Tellafriend #Tellyourself campaign, which focused on bridging the gap between action and education for millennials. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cochrane, 22, who majors in Business Administration, was excited to compete with some of Brock\u2019s top marketing and communication students.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47994\" style=\"width: 362px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47994\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-47994\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Dobson-group-shot-1050x646.jpg\" alt=\"Dobson group shot\" width=\"352\" height=\"217\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Three teams of students from the Goodman School of Business and the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film competed in the final round of the Grant Dobson Case Competition on Tuesday, Nov. 21.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was an opportunity to hear fresh ideas and gain new insights on industry trends, but also hear from some of the top industry professionals and have them critique our presentations,\u201d said Cochrane. \u201cOverall, it was a wonderful experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team of Srujal Patel, Simon Chan and Mark-Joseph Kisirye was awarded second place, and Chloe Euale and Larissa Young placed third.
