{"id":47708,"date":"2017-11-06T16:20:14","date_gmt":"2017-11-06T21:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47708"},"modified":"2018-12-20T11:41:57","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T16:41:57","slug":"brock-prof-publishes-three-books-in-one-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/brock-prof-publishes-three-books-in-one-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock prof publishes three books in one week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applied Linguistics Professor Tom Farrell recently had a busy seven-day stretch, with two books, along with one edited volume, all going to press under his name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farrell had no idea that the three manuscripts he submitted at various times over the past 15 months would all appear within a few days of one another.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-47715\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Farrell-Book-2-300x432.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"324\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each of the three books explores a different angle of reflective practice and teaching, a subject to which Farrell has devoted himself for many years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe engaging in reflective practice can help us discover who we are when we teach and what influences our practices,\u201d Farrell asserts. \u201cIf we do not, then we may be engaging in practices that are not in the best interests of our students&#8217; development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflective practice in teaching encourages educators to examine their personal teaching style, exploring why they choose to use specific methods, and what those methods mean for them personally and for their students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe true beneficiaries of teachers engaging in reflective practice are our students,\u201d Farrell says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research on Reflective Practice in TESOL<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Routledge, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provides a detailed analysis of recent research on encouraging reflective practices in TESOL, and outlines how this practice has been embraced within TESOL and how it continues to impact the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sociolinguistics and Language Teaching<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> TESOL International publications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explores the relationship between language and society, especially as it relates to language teaching, and the importance of multilingualism, gender bias, identity development and teacher roles in shaping student perspectives of language.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-47713 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Farrell-Book-1-300x431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"332\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The edited collection,<\/span><em> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preservice Teacher Education<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provides insight on the disparity between theory-focused courses and actual classroom practice in TESOL. It is also published by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TESOL International publications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farrell has long been passionate about teaching and the role reflective practice plays in education.
