{"id":47687,"date":"2017-11-03T12:09:46","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T16:09:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47687"},"modified":"2017-11-03T17:06:10","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T21:06:10","slug":"play-to-bring-brock-researchers-work-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/play-to-bring-brock-researchers-work-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Play to bring Brock researcher\u2019s work to life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock faculty members, graduate students and community artists have come together to transform the work of a Brock researcher into a play to be performed at<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0this weekend\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.festivalofreaders.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Festival of Readers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Want to Paint on the Walls of the Cave: Stories from the Contact Zone<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blends dance, music, drama, poetry, visuals and audience participation to explore the experiences of immigrants, refugees and indigenous peoples in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since it was first performed at the In the Soil Arts Festival in April, the play has been expanded with new content and performers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current cast includes several Brock University faculty members and graduate students from diverse backgrounds. Using a collaborative playbuilding approach, the performers wove their personal experiences and ideas into the play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snezana Ratkovic, a research officer and instructor in the Faculty of Education, worked with colleagues in the Faculty to develop the play <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/refugee-experience-inspires-brock-researchers-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">based on her PhD research into the experiences of refugee women<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having settled in Canada as a refugee from the former Yugoslavia, she understands the challenge of creating a new life in an unfamiliar country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Named after a transcript poem Ratkovic created, the play\u2019s title reflects how the women in her research wanted to express their creativity while striving to learn new languages, rebuild careers and support their families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ratkovic credited the support of several faculty and community members for helping to bring the production together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associate Professor Kari-Lynn Winters, in the Department of Teacher Education, is the play\u2019s director and co-playwright; Assistant Professor Catherine Longboat, of Brock\u2019s Tecumseh Centre For Aboriginal Research and Education, used her expertise of the indigenous community to aid in the play&#8217;s creation; Tecumseh Centre Assistant Professor Spy D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch composed the show\u2019s music; recent Brock graduate Heryka Miranda, a social change dance artist and activist-scholar, worked with the performers as a choreographer and dance director; and Catherine Magowan, D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch\u2019s composing partner, was the recording engineer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Want to Paint on the Walls of the Cave<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be performed at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Niagara Artists Centre, 354 St. Paul St. in St. Catharines.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock faculty members, graduate students and community artists have come together to transform the work of a Brock researcher into a play to be performed at\u00a0this weekend\u2019s\u00a0Festival of Readers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":45,"featured_media":47688,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[40,7,1,4],"tags":[5945,98,5947,5199,5629,5570,5946],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/47687"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/45"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=47687"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/47687\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":47693,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/47687\/revisions\/47693"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/47688"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=47687"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=47687"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=47687"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
