{"id":47629,"date":"2017-11-01T09:03:01","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T13:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47629"},"modified":"2018-05-24T16:16:29","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T20:16:29","slug":"brock-librarian-explores-internationalization-in-new-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/brock-librarian-explores-internationalization-in-new-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock librarian explores internationalization in new book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an era of intensifying internationalization in higher education, Karen Bordonaro is exploring the evolving role librarians play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her latest book, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Librarianship at Home and Abroad<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the librarian liaison at Brock\u2019s James A. Gibson Library examines libraries and reinforces their position as an integral part of international efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book was informed by personal experience \u2014 Bordonaro commutes daily to campus from her home in western New York \u2014 and a survey of 300 librarians from around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the third in a series of books written by Bordonaro with an internationalization theme. She works extensively with international students and scholars as a liaison librarian, while also working part time as a Brock ESL instructor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis book was about turning the lens to my colleagues to find out what they think it means to be an international librarian,\u201d said the 35-year veteran of the profession, who has been working at Brock since 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her research affirmed internationalization goes beyond the \u201cglamorized image of working abroad\u201d and includes work that is done in one\u2019s own country as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can practise internationalization at home,\u201d she said. \u201cThat opens it up to more people, not just those who have the time, money, ability and research support to go abroad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achieving that global mission at home is possible by supporting exchange students, whether they are studying at a local institution or visiting another country, and by hosting and mentoring librarians from abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libraries \u201cconnect people and resources across boundaries,\u201d said Bordonaro, and their role in internationalization is just starting to be understood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many librarians see international students as a special population that may require more support with library services, but few know exactly how to offer that assistance, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bordonaro is hopeful the book will provide some direction, while helping librarians to reframe the way they think about their profession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith so many international students coming to Canada, there are huge opportunities for librarians to become more involved in thinking beyond our own local circumstances,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is a home away from home in many ways for students.
