{"id":47619,"date":"2017-11-01T08:08:47","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T12:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47619"},"modified":"2017-11-01T16:23:42","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T20:23:42","slug":"aboriginal-mythology-in-speaker-series-spotlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/11\/aboriginal-mythology-in-speaker-series-spotlight\/","title":{"rendered":"Aboriginal mythology in speaker series&#8217; spotlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Award-winning Cree playwright <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomsonhighway.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomson Highway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will explore Aboriginal mythology during a speaking engagement at Brock University next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highway will address the role Aboriginal mythology plays in relation to issues such as environmental health and preservation, and its place in the context of world mythology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born on an island in Maria Lake in northwestern Manitoba, Highway grew up travelling Canada&#8217;s sub-Arctic with his family, who were nomadic caribou hunters. He is a member of the Barren Lands First Nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he started his career in social work, Highway has become an internationally recognized author, playwright and musician. As well as numerous awards and nominations for his work, he was named to the Order of Canada in 1994.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highway will be visiting the University as part of the Faculty of Education\u2019s Distinguished Speaker Series, which will continue throughout the academic year.
