{"id":47531,"date":"2017-10-30T17:00:06","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T21:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47531"},"modified":"2017-10-31T11:11:19","modified_gmt":"2017-10-31T15:11:19","slug":"canadian-un-body-appoints-brock-biologist-to-senior-position","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/canadian-un-body-appoints-brock-biologist-to-senior-position\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian UN body appoints Brock biologist to senior position"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\"><span class=\"page-intro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Canadian Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (CCUNESCO) has appointed Brock biologist Liette Vasseur to head up one of its commissions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vasseur is President of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unesco.ca\/home-accueil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CCUNESCO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Sectoral Commission on Natural, Social and Human Sciences, an 11-member group of Canadian scientists, academics and others providing knowledge and expertise on a range of issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include social and environmental impacts of climate change; conservation of natural heritage and water resources; inclusion of newcomers and vulnerable groups; reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous people; youth engagement; and measures to fight discrimination, racism, violence, bullying and radicalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47532\" style=\"width: 296px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47532\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-47532\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Liette-Vasseur-e1509389914144-818x1050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"368\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock biologist Liette Vasseur, right, who was recently appointed as President of CCUNESCO\u2019s Sectoral Commission on Natural, Social and Human Sciences, is pictured with Louise Vandelac, former Chair of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO\u2019s Sectoral Commission on Human, Social and Natural Sciences, and S\u00e9bastien Goupil, General Secretary of CCUNESCO.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re producing reflection papers on some of the topics we believe are important to come up with a long-range vision of how Canadians and the federal government can implement various actions related to sustainability,\u201d explains Vasseur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sectoral Commission advises CCUNESCO on the organization\u2019s programs and activities in these areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In turn, CCUNESCO, operating under the Canada Council for the Arts, seeks to<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unesco.ca\/home-accueil\/about%20-%20a%20propos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> connect Canadians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the broader work of UNESCO, whose work \u201ccontributes to a peaceful, equitable and sustainable future that leaves no one behind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vasseur\u2019s Oct. 2 appointment is the latest in several leadership positions she holds at the international level since being named<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2014\/06\/brock-launches-unesco-chair-in-community-sustainability\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> UNESCO Chair in Community Sustainability: From Local to Global<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in June 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2016, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) named Vasseur as Vice-Chair North America and Caribbean Region on the IUCN\u2019s 14-member steering committee of the Commission on Ecosystem Management. She oversees a portfolio of six of the commission\u2019s 30 thematic and specialist groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IUCN, based in Switzerland, is considered to be the leading authority on the natural environment, providing scientific research and expertise to governments and civic groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUCN, drawing upon the knowledge of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/about\/commissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 16,000 experts worldwide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, covers the areas of species survival, environmental law, protected areas, social and economic policy, ecosystem management, and education and communication. Its<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Red List of Threatened Species<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which tracks the risk of extinction of thousands of plant and animal species and subspecies, is considered to be the world\u2019s most comprehensive and authoritative inventory of Earth\u2019s biological diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also leads the Commission on Ecosystem Management\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/commissions\/commission-ecosystem-management\/our-work\/cems-thematic-groups\/ecosystem-governance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ecosystem Governance group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
