{"id":47517,"date":"2017-10-27T14:13:27","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T18:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47517"},"modified":"2018-05-24T16:16:34","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T20:16:34","slug":"education-prof-named-brocks-first-open-access-champion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/education-prof-named-brocks-first-open-access-champion\/","title":{"rendered":"Education prof named Brock\u2019s first Open Access champion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicola Simmons believes research and scholarship should be accessible to society at large.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was the motivation behind the creation of her<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/researchsotl.wordpress.com\/annotation-process\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annotated Literature Database<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a worldwide listing of research papers that explore dozens of topics within the field of education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s intended to be a point of entry for either students or faculty member scholars who are interested in research that pertains to higher education teaching and learning,\u201d explains the assistant professor of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simmons\u2019 work to launch the database, as well as her publishing and blogging activities, have earned her the inaugural<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/teach-publish\/open-access\/award\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University Award for Open Access<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first-ever award recognizes a Brock community member who is a champion of freely sharing scholarship with audiences around the globe. The award competition was held in conjunction with<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Open Access Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Oct. 23 to 27.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe breadth of Nicola\u2019s dedication to open access made her a standout,\u201d says Elizabeth Yates, Liaison\/Scholarly Communication Librarian, who helped adjudicate the award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot only is she actively publishing and reviewing for open access journals, but she is also openly engaging with the teaching and learning community via scholarly blogs and websites.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award is part of the James A. Gibson Library\u2019s efforts to raise awareness about the importance of making scholarly digital content free and widely accessible to all in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until recently, published research had only been available to institutions or individuals who could afford to pay costly fees to access subscription journals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have a belief that knowledge should be made freely available,\u201d says Simmons. \u201cIf we hide our research and scholarship behind these subscription-only walls, then I\u2019m not sure the work always reaches the people who will best implement it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe work we produce should be as widely available as possible to as many people as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simmons strives to instill these open access values and procedures among her students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been thrilled to engage our graduate students in writing those annotations,\u201d she says of the Annotated Literature Database. \u201cI either do it with the students as interns or embed it as an assignment in the courses when the course that I\u2019m teaching is appropriate for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also encourages her students to publish book reviews and articles in open access journals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of my students was amazed at how many people had read the piece that we\u2019d done.
