{"id":47494,"date":"2017-10-26T14:24:37","date_gmt":"2017-10-26T18:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47494"},"modified":"2018-07-17T13:36:09","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T17:36:09","slug":"niagara-leadership-summit-for-women-returning-to-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/niagara-leadership-summit-for-women-returning-to-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Niagara Leadership Summit for Women returning to campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madi Fuller wants to inspire women \u2014 and men \u2014 to support one another, lift each other up and create a sense of empowerment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recent Brock University graduate will be one of several speakers bringing to light issues impacting females in the community during the fourth annual Niagara Leadership Summit for Women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event takes place Saturday, Oct. 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at various locations on campus and is expected to draw more than 300 attendees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A proud political science alumna and member of the summit\u2019s planning committee, Fuller will be delivering one of three 10-minute \u2018Power Talks\u2019 scheduled throughout the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to an address by keynote speaker Ashley Callingbull, who became the first First Nations woman to win the title of Mrs. Universe in 2015, the summit will also include a series of presentations and workshops, including several hosted by members of the Brock community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the topics to be discussed include leadership in parenting, breaking mental health barriers, women in politics, women in business and entrepreneurship, addressing racism and building inclusivity through language, and indigenous issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fuller is hopeful she will see women, but also men in the summit\u2019s crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFeminism is for everyone,\u201d she said. \u201cWomen\u2019s rights, feminism is a political issue and everyone needs to be involved in that process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Event chair and founder Julie Rorison (BA \u201910) encouraged people to attend and participate in a fun but educational day of learning, sharing and networking with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a day that presents opportunities for people who aren\u2019t the usual suspects, who aren\u2019t the people that you see in the newspaper everyday or hear on a microphone,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are creating opportunities for different leaders, people from different backgrounds who aren\u2019t necessarily elected or holding a chair in a boardroom, or have a title on a business card that says they\u2019re a leader.
