Gibson Library wants to raise awareness about the importance of making scholarly digital content widely accessible to all in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To do so, a series of activities will be held next week during <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Open Access Week<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent changes in Canadian government legislation and worldwide trends are bringing about a transformation in academic publishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help Brock\u2019s research and scholarly community understand and take advantage of these changes, the Library is hosting several events during<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/2017\/10\/18\/on-display-open-access-week-exhibit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s annual celebration of International Open Access Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open Access Fact or Fiction Prize Wheel on Oct. 23 from 2 to 3 p.m. and Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to noon; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ryecast.ryerson.ca\/11\/Live\/1739.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a live-streamed presentation from University of Ottawa Professor Michael Geist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linkages between copyright reform, open access and open educational resources on Oct. 24 at 12:40 p.m.; and the presentation of the inaugural<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/teach-publish\/open-access\/award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University Award for Open Access.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Canada, researchers are required to abide by the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/063.nsf\/eng\/h_F6765465.html?OpenDocument\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which all federally-funded, peer-reviewed journal publications must be made freely accessible within 12 months of publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who receive grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) can comply with the policy by either:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">archiving the full-text, peer-reviewed post-print version or final published version in a repository, such as the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dr.library.brocku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock Digital Repository<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">publishing in an open access journal<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two methods ensure that anyone anywhere in the world can read journal articles. Under traditional journal publishing, articles are only available to those who have paid hefty subscription fees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most researchers and scholars agree with the principle of open access, says Brock Scholarly Communications Librarian Elizabeth Yates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yates, Collections Librarian Ian Gibson and other Brock colleagues co-authored a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journal.lib.uoguelph.ca\/index.php\/perj\/article\/view\/3703#.WeUUj4Zryyt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 study in Partnership: the Canadian Journal of Library and Information Practice and Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that examined faculty experiences with open access publishing at Brock University and Wilfrid Laurier University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team found that more than 75 per cent of arts and humanities, science and health science, and social science faculty surveyed said their research results should be freely accessible to the general public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But less than half of the respondents said they would consider publishing in an open access journal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some open access journals charge authors fees ranging from $2,500 to $6,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, some faculty question the legitimacy, integrity and academic rigour of open access journals, viewing them as lacking the high reputations and quality of traditional, subscription-based journals, Yates says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these challenges, \u201cmore and more researchers are practicing open scholarship because they see the benefits of open access, including higher citation counts and greater opportunities for collaboration,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She notes a tremendous growth in platforms outside of journals, including \u2018pre-print servers\u2019 where research can be written up and shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou might post your paper and try to get comments before you submit it to a journal, or you might decide, \u2018this is how I want to share my research,\u2019 period, without pursuing a journal publication.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there are \u2018open lab notebooks,\u2019 where researchers publish their results in real time, as they\u2019re working in their labs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yates says the Library provides a number of supports for researchers and scholars as they pursue open access publishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrock University librarians have taken a leadership role on campus in supporting open access by adopting a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/teach-publish\/open-access\/library-open-access-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Library Open Access Policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Yates. \u201cThe policy, adopted by Library Council in June, means that librarians are \u2018walking the talk\u2019 by making their own scholarship openly accessible whenever possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other supports include an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/teach-publish\/open-access\/open-access-publishing-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open Access Publishing Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help researchers defray costs and an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/teach-publish\/open-access\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open Access information section<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Library\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock\u2019s James A.
