{"id":47325,"date":"2017-10-18T16:22:50","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T20:22:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47325"},"modified":"2018-01-03T14:14:51","modified_gmt":"2018-01-03T19:14:51","slug":"national-study-confirms-benefits-of-brock-created-lung-cancer-risk-prediction-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/national-study-confirms-benefits-of-brock-created-lung-cancer-risk-prediction-model\/","title":{"rendered":"National study confirms benefits of Brock-created lung cancer risk prediction model"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\">A lung cancer prediction model developed by a Brock University scientist is highly effective in catching the disease in its early stages when combined with screening and follow-up, says a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanonc\/article\/PIIS1470-2045(17)30597-1\/fulltext?elsca1=tlxpr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new national study.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Brock Epidemiologist Martin Tammem\u00e4gi led a team of researchers from across the country in a first-of-its-kind study that recruited people for lung cancer screening based on the results of his <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/lung-cancer-risk-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lung cancer risk prediction model<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to demonstrate that using the risk prediction model for enrolling people into the screening program was going to be efficient and successful and in fact, that\u2019s what we showed,\u201d says the professor in the Department of Health Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>In the study published Wednesday, Oct. 18 in the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanonc\/article\/PIIS1470-2045(17)30597-1\/fulltext?elsca1=tlxpr\"><em>Lancet Oncology<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> the research team recruited 2,537 participants from eight study centres across Canada between September 2008 and December 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The participants, current and former smokers between the ages of 50 and 75, were identified to be at risk for developing lung cancer after filling out Tammem\u00e4gi\u2019s risk prediction calculator.<\/p>\n<p>They were offered computed tomography (CT scan) lung screening at the start of the study, after one year, after four years and with additional follow-ups.<\/p>\n<p>Participants also filled out questionnaires measuring their quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>Lung cancers were detected in 6.5 per cent of the participants. Of those, 75 per cent of these lung cancers were Stage 1 or Stage 2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe followed individuals on average for five-and-a-half years to see if they developed lung cancer and in fact, we found more lung cancers than expected,\u201d says Tammem\u00e4gi. \u201cThe prediction model is a tool that is very successful at identifying individuals at risk of developing lung cancer at an early, curable stage, so that is good news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Building on earlier efforts in the U.S., Tammem\u00e4gi\u2019s model uses a wide range of factors \u2014 such as smoking status, intensity and duration, age, Body Mass Index and family history of lung cancer \u2014 along with mathematical equations, to predict the risk of an individual getting lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The article, titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanonc\/article\/PIIS1470-2045(17)30597-1\/fulltext?elsca1=tlxpr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Participant Selection for Lung Cancer Screening by Risk Modeling \u2013 The Prospective\u00a0Pan-Canadian Study<\/em><\/a>, says the team\u2019s findings have broad \u201cpublic health and clinic implications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore accurate selection of high-risk individuals for lung cancer screening appears to improve cost-effectiveness,\u201d says the study.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that people are less anxious about undergoing CT scanning than researchers thought they would be.<\/p>\n<p>More details of the study, funded mainly by the Terry Fox Research Institute and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/pancan-lung-screen-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in North America and in many other countries. Five-year survival rates for lung cancer are only about 17 per cent.
