{"id":47198,"date":"2017-10-13T09:23:30","date_gmt":"2017-10-13T13:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47198"},"modified":"2017-10-13T17:23:16","modified_gmt":"2017-10-13T21:23:16","slug":"brock-spirit-alive-in-student-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/brock-spirit-alive-in-student-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock spirit alive in student leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Bax and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle Balge have exemplified what it means to be student leaders\u00a0\u2014 both inside and outside of the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were each honoured for their efforts during Friday\u2019s Fall Convocation ceremonies \u2014 Blage in the morning and Bax in the afternoon \u2014 and recognized with Brock\u2019s Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock Medal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award is presented to one undergraduate and one graduate student who best exemplify the spirit of the school\u2019s namesake, Maj.-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock and show traits such as courage, innovation, leadership, inspiration and community involvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47204\" style=\"width: 487px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47204\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-47204\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Spirit-of-Brock-Sarah-Bax-RS-1050x816.jpg\" alt=\"Spirit of Brock Sarah Bax\" width=\"477\" height=\"370\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah Bax, who received her master\u2019s in mathematics Friday afternoon, was presented with the Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock Medal by John Zoccoli during the Fall Convocation ceremony Friday afternoon.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This fall\u2019s honorees were both active student leaders who found that embracing extracurricular activities and finding ways to help others shaped their experiences at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was through assisting others that Michelle Balge, who completed an honours degree in Sociology with a concentration in Critical Animal Studies, found personal fulfillment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her journey to convocation included a courageous decision to leave school for a year to take care of her own mental health. When she returned to Brock, she divided her attention between her studies and finding ways to help others who might be struggling with mental health concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPerhaps the most positive aspect of my experience at Brock was with Active Minds,\u201d Balge said. \u201cI made new friends and found I could help people through my knowledge, experience and volunteering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 26-year-old Georgetown, Ont., native became an award-winning leader in Active Minds, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an organization dedicated to raising awareness of mental health and suicide among college and university students. She developed handouts, videos and websites, and devoted countless hours to organizing student events to inspire and support her peers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon leaving Brock, Balge will continue to share her experiences and insights with others, both through speaking engagements and in a memoir that will be released in February of 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This memoir bares all of me, so it\u2019s both terrifying and exciting,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat I want people to get out of it is hope \u2014 to know that you\u2019re not alone and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just want to be able to help people and make a difference in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t until her second year of University that Sarah Bax, who received her master\u2019s degree in mathematics Friday afternoon, realized the importance of getting involved, both on campus and in the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs time passed, I started to join more activities and volunteer at different events with the mind set, \u2018if I don\u2019t, who will?\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cThis thought held me accountable for my actions and inspired me to accept any challenge that came my way, leading to my involvement in many activities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 24-year-old Paris, Ont., native honed her leadership skills as a teaching assistant and worked to deliver material in a creative way that encouraged students to \u201cleave lab having enjoyed their time and with a newfound confidence in their abilities,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her passion for numbers made her a favourite at Brock\u2019s Math Camp, where she spent four summers organizing events and teaching courses that break down complex concepts in a way students can easily understand.
