{"id":47106,"date":"2017-10-11T07:57:06","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T11:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47106"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:56:11","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:56:11","slug":"armstrong-missile-interception-from-yemen-to-the-south-china-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/armstrong-missile-interception-from-yemen-to-the-south-china-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"ARMSTRONG: Missile interception from Yemen to the South China Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Armstrong, an associate professor in\u00a0Brock\u2019s Goodman School of Business, wrote a piece <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/missile-interception-from-yemen-to-the-south-china-sea-84676?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20October%2010%202017&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20October%2010%202017+CID_ad68534dadad0894f71159c8d1857b70&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=Missile%20interception%20from%20Yemen%20to%20the%20South%20China%20Sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently published in The Conversation<\/a> about a missile interception by the guided-missile destroyer USS Mason and its implications for naval strategists.<\/p>\n<p>Armstrong writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>One year ago, the American warship\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/ddg87\/Pages\/default.aspx\">USS Mason<\/a>\u00a0defended itself from attacking cruise missiles while patrolling the Red Sea. It was a minor affair with few shots fired and no one hurt. But it was noteworthy for its global security implications.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On Oct. 9, 2016,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/aegis-defense-system-helped-stop-missile-attack-on-uss-mason-1.433974#.WckVFbKGOpo\">Mason\u2019s radar detected<\/a>\u00a0two\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/imda.org.il\/English\/Threats\/threats_missile.asp?missileid=16\">anti-ship cruise missiles<\/a>\u00a0launching 48 kilometres away from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/explained-how-the-arab-spring-led-to-an-increasingly-vicious-civil-war-in-yemen-55968\">rebel-held areas of Yemen<\/a>. They flew low over the water at about 1,100 kilometres an hour, and would reach the ship in just over two minutes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mason is a guided missile destroyer designed for air and missile defence. Sailors control its weapons from the combat information centre, a windowless room lit with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/fact_display.asp?cid=2100&amp;tid=200&amp;ct=2\">Aegis computer system<\/a>\u00a0screens. Those weapons create several layers of defences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The ship first launched two long-range\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gR9vOPsFihM\">Standard<\/a>\u00a0interceptor missiles. It followed those with one medium-range\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cQIDNDi7TY4\">Evolved Sea Sparrow<\/a>\u00a0interceptor. The interceptors would try to shoot down the incoming cruise missiles.
