{"id":47070,"date":"2017-10-10T16:00:34","date_gmt":"2017-10-10T20:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47070"},"modified":"2021-04-16T08:44:13","modified_gmt":"2021-04-16T12:44:13","slug":"when-it-comes-to-perceived-well-being-perspective-is-everything-brock-prof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/when-it-comes-to-perceived-well-being-perspective-is-everything-brock-prof\/","title":{"rendered":"When it comes to perceived well-being, perspective is everything: Brock prof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The definition of living a happy and satisfying life can be very different depending on your age.<\/p>\n<p>A Brock University psychology professor says while younger adults tend to be overly optimistic, older adults tend to be the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor Michael Busseri will discuss the different ways of thinking about and experiencing well-being across the lifespan during a community event being held at Brock Thursday, Oct. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Well-Being and Aging: Understanding our beliefs and experiences of well-being across the lifespan <\/strong>is the next Speaker Series event hosted by Brock\u2019s Centre for Lifespan Development Research and Growing with Brock. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required and available online at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.ca\/e\/well-being-and-aging-understanding-our-beliefs-and-experiences-of-well-being-across-the-lifespan-tickets-37812526284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brockwellbeing.eventbrite.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Busseri, Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of Brock\u2019s Well-Being Research Lab, said when it comes to outlooks on life, there are \u201cdramatic differences between age groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYounger adults seem to see life as getting better and better over time, whereas older adults see life in terms of decline,\u201d he said. \u201cSo people see very different futures depending on their age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Busseri said he hopes to provide new insights into how people of all ages can live their lives with a different perspective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite all the radical changes we experience, there\u2019s a strong story of stability. Even things like losing a job or splitting up with a spouse do not necessarily spell the end of our happiness or well-being.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe aren\u2019t always aware of just how good we are at adapting to change and at responding to life\u2019s ups and downs,\u201d Busseri said, \u201cand growing older doesn\u2019t have to mean getting less happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What: <\/strong><em>Well-Being and Aging: Understanding our beliefs and experiences of well-being across the lifespan<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who:<\/strong>\u00a0Community members, educators, practitioners, students and researchers interested in learning more about\u00a0well-being across the lifespan<\/p>\n<p><strong>When<\/strong>:\u00a0Thursday, Oct. 12, 6 to 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where:<\/strong>\u00a0David S.
