{"id":47066,"date":"2017-10-10T15:49:43","date_gmt":"2017-10-10T19:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=47066"},"modified":"2017-10-10T16:13:45","modified_gmt":"2017-10-10T20:13:45","slug":"rodman-exhibitions-shortlisted-for-provincial-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/rodman-exhibitions-shortlisted-for-provincial-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Rodman exhibitions shortlisted for provincial awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Rodman Hall exhibitions have been shortlisted for 2017 honours by the Ontario Association of Art Galleries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual awards are the only juried, peer-assessed awards of their kind and are designed to recognize excellence in arts institutions and professionals in the public art gallery sector. The awards celebrate gallery professionals, including curators and technical assistants, alongside artists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also Also<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by artist and Brock Visual Arts instructor Donna Akrey was shortlisted for Exhibition of the Year with a budget under $20,000. Featured at Rodman Feb. 11 to April 30, 2017, the showcase included soft sculpture, interactive pieces and video work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaboration figured prominently in Akrey\u2019s exhibition, with gallery visitors invited to interact with pieces and to contribute to a cumulative installation by creating sculptures with common items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRodman Hall strives to use contemporary art as an agent of social change,\u201d said Marcie Bronson, curator for both of Rodman\u2019s shortlisted exhibitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also Also<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fostered a sense of belonging at the gallery and encouraged participation in the arts, while also advancing critical discourse on Akrey\u2019s practice and Canadian community-oriented and activist art.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also shortlisted, this time for Exhibition of the Year with a budget under $10,000, was local artist Elizabeth Chitty\u2019s first solo exhibition at Rodman Hall, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Grass is Still Green<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The exhibition explored ideas of place, land ownership and treaties while on display at Rodman June 4 to Aug. 21, 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47068\" style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47068\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-47068\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Chitty-exhibit-garden-rodman-hall.jpg\" alt=\"The Grass is Still Green exhibition\" width=\"414\" height=\"276\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elizabeth Chitty\u2019s exhibition The Grass is Still Green, encouraged visitors to reflect on ideas of land ownership, colonization and reconciliation.
