{"id":46988,"date":"2017-10-04T08:06:23","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T12:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=46988"},"modified":"2018-05-24T16:16:46","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T20:16:46","slug":"search-now-on-for-brocks-first-open-access-champion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/10\/search-now-on-for-brocks-first-open-access-champion\/","title":{"rendered":"Search now on for Brock\u2019s first open access champion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new award has been created to highlight the potential of open access to broaden the reach of Brock research and transform scholarly publishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in advance of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Open Access Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/teach-publish\/open-access\/award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University Award for Open Access<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recognizes a Brock community member who is a champion of freely sharing scholarship with audiences around the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to enhancing public access to publicly-funded research, open access benefits both individual researchers and their institutions by promoting higher citation counts, increased community impact and enhanced opportunities for collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The benefits of open access for research dissemination are huge,&#8221; said University Librarian Mark Robertson. &#8220;We\u2019re excited to host an award that recognizes the important role that Brock researchers play in championing open access in this changing landscape.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open to Brock University faculty, librarians, staff and students, the $2,500 award may be used to either pay an article processing charge for an open access journal or to support a non-profit platform for open scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open Access, which refers to scholarly digital content that is free to the end user, is a dramatic evolution in how scholarship is disseminated. For centuries, published research has only been available to institutions or individuals who can afford to pay costly fees to access subscription journals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Open access opens up knowledge to everyone,&#8221; said Elizabeth Yates, Liaison\/Scholarly Communication Librarian. &#8220;We want to honour those at Brock who are helping shape a more sustainable and democratic system of scholarly communication.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applications including a nomination statement and supporting documentation, must be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/teach-publish\/open-access\/award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submitted online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Oct. 13 at noon.
