<\/b>Screams of \u2018arrr matey\u2019 and \u2018shiver me timbers\u2019 filled the air in Brock\u2019s Instructional Resource Centre Tuesday, as a group of children seated in a pretend ocean roared with laughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wearing\u00a0a captain\u2019s hat, Kari-Lynn Winters, an associate professor in Brock\u2019s Department of Teacher Education, passionately shared her new book,<\/span> Best Pirate<\/span><\/em>, with the youngsters from the Rosalind Blauer Centre for Child Care, bringing the characters to life as she moved throughout the room.<\/span><\/p>\n

Winters, who teaches drama in education, felt it only fitting to introduce the children\u2019s book on Sept. 19 \u2014 also known as International Talk Like a Pirate Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Best Pirate<\/span><\/em> is the third in a series published by Pajama Press, preceded by Winters\u2019 <\/span>Bad Pirate<\/span><\/em> and <\/span>Good Pirate<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho doesn\u2019t love pirates?\u201d Winters said when asked about the inspiration behind the books. \u201cThey talk funny and they\u2019re adventurous \u2014 all kids love adventure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Many children have responded positively to the series\u2019 main character, a female <\/span>buccaneer \u2014 and dog \u2014 named Augusta Garrick.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of kids will say, \u2018I\u2019m glad you made her a girl.\u2019 There should be more stories about adventurous girls,\u201d Winters said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest edition, i<\/span>llustrated by Dean Griffiths and edited by <\/span>Ann Featherstone, offers life lessons about sharing and compromise.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe really want to get kids imagining, feeling like they\u2019re engaged in the story, feeling like they can visualize it, make predictions and connections,\u201d Winters said. \u201cI hope they understand the story \u2014 the idea that you don\u2019t have to be the same as everyone else, that different friends can work together towards an outcome that\u2019s positive for everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Winters, who has published 25 picture and poetry books, hoped the teacher candidates in attendance at Tuesday\u2019s launch found inspiration to bring stories to life when sharing them with children.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be a dull moment \u2014 sitting in a chair, just opening a book and reading it,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can really engage children with questions. You can use drama to bring books to life and to liven children\u2019s imaginations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
