{"id":46440,"date":"2017-08-30T11:31:15","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T15:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=46440"},"modified":"2017-08-30T17:00:07","modified_gmt":"2017-08-30T21:00:07","slug":"understanding-student-finances-just-got-easier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/08\/understanding-student-finances-just-got-easier\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding student finances just got easier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new webpage has been launched to provide Brock students with a one-stop shop for details of their financial history with the institution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new page went live Aug. 20 and allows for students to review both a summary and detailed breakdown of their tuition costs, residence fees, financial aid and various payments, as well as scholarships and other grants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBefore, it was literally just a bank statement that showed all your transactions,\u201d Patti Malton, Manager, Student Financial Services and Accounts Receivable, said of the old format that many students and their families had difficulty navigating. \u201cNow, it shows you for the academic year how much you were or will be charged in spring, summer, fall and winter. It\u00a0tells you what\u2019s due now, whether past due or due within 30 days,\u00a0and gives you\u00a0due dates for upcoming payments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meant to be more user friendly and to aid with budgeting, the new page aims to address many of the common questions received by the University about student financial history. It replaces Brock&#8217;s online fee calculator that once allowed students to estimate their costs, as well as the old student financial history page, and is available by logging into\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/my.brocku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my.brocku.ca<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour financial history is summarized so you don\u2019t have to sort through 10 pages of details \u2014 although it&#8217;s also there\u00a0if you want to,\u201d Malton said of the new format.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The webpage includes information about financial assistance \u2014 how much a student is receiving, when it will be dispersed and whether it is being sent to the student or directly to the University \u2014 along with\u00a0links to useful external sites, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/osap-ontario-student-assistance-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OSAP<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help prompts are also available throughout the page to explain what each segment means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The page\u00a0will continue to be fine-tuned as feedback is received.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Malton said the new process will also be beneficial for Brock\u00a0as it provides real-time assessment data rather than data on a per-term basis. &#8220;That means more accurate financial forecasting for the University, which will help Brock to make decisions at an earlier time in the year,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project was prompted by Brock\u2019s role as a pilot school in Ontario for net tuition billing, which outlines\u00a0how much a student is receiving in non-repayable assistance, as well as how much they will be required to pay after that assistance is deducted from tuition costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The provincial government is requiring all Ontario colleges and universities to provide net tuition billing beginning in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new webpage has been launched to provide Brock students with a one-stop shop for details of their financial history with the institution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":38,"featured_media":46441,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[7,1,4],"tags":[4787,5734,5733],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/46440"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/38"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=46440"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/46440\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/46441"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=46440"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=46440"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=46440"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
