{"id":46405,"date":"2017-08-28T15:49:27","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T19:49:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=46405"},"modified":"2017-08-28T22:40:47","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T02:40:47","slug":"math-camp-draws-participants-from-as-far-as-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/08\/math-camp-draws-participants-from-as-far-as-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Math camp draws participants from as far as Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"page-intro\"><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aryan Alavi Razavi Ravari\u2019s love of numbers recently led him on a journey nearly 10,000 kilometres from home.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 14-year-old math whiz travelled with his parents from Tehran, Iran, to Brock University in mid-August to participate in a two-week math camp hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ravari learned about the camp through the online <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cariboutests.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caribou Mathematics Competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an international contest held six times a year and run by Brock Professor Thomas Wolf.\u00a0In the 2016-17 school year, the competition drew nearly 33,000 students in<br \/>\nGrades 3 to 12 from 27 countries who wrote\u00a0more than 120,000 tests. It aims to expose middle and high school students to news ways of thinking involving math, and is offered in English, French and Persian.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46406\" style=\"width: 348px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46406\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-46406\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Aryan-Alavi-Razavi-Ravari-math-camp-RS-941x1050.jpg\" alt=\"Aryan Alavi Razavi Ravari\" width=\"338\" height=\"377\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aryan Alavi Razavi Ravari travelled with his family from Tehran, Iran, to participate in Brock\u2019s recent math camp, where he impressed his peers and instructors with his math skills.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After competing in the contest\u2019s most recent edition, Ravari came across information about the Brock camp, also run by Wolf, and decided to make the trip to Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m interested in math very much,\u201d he said during his two-week visit on campus, which came to an end Aug. 25. He described the camp as \u201cgood and useful,\u201d adding he came away with new knowledge he plans to use moving forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it was his first time at Brock, Ravari and his family have travelled to Canada on multiple occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a huge and beautiful University,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before his departure, Ravari dominated the first week\u2019s Math Camp Olympiad with a perfect score, followed by a tie for first place in the second week\u2019s competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Currently in its fourth year, the camp brings together students who share a common interest, exposing them to higher level mathematics while building problem-solving skills that are applicable to any field of study.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s camp included a group of 21 students, who ranged in age from 10 to 15 years old.
