{"id":46384,"date":"2017-08-25T14:19:30","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T18:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=46384"},"modified":"2017-08-25T14:21:14","modified_gmt":"2017-08-25T18:21:14","slug":"homecoming-reception-to-celebrate-the-class-of-67","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/08\/homecoming-reception-to-celebrate-the-class-of-67\/","title":{"rendered":"Homecoming reception to celebrate the Class of &#8217;67"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every June, students gather with excitement to cross the stage at Convocation and, just like those before them, they are anxious and optimistic about what lies ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tradition \u2014 and the attached emotions \u2014 has remained the same since Brock\u2019s first graduates celebrated their accomplishments in 1967.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, that inaugural Brock University class will mark the 50th anniversary of its graduation during Homecoming Weekend from Sept. 15 to 17.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a name that placed him at the top of the Convocation list, John Auld (BA \u201967) was the first graduate to ever cross Brock\u2019s stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46386\" style=\"width: 433px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46386\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-46386\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Silver-Badgers-Class-of-1967-1050x1025.jpg\" alt=\"Brock's inaugural convocation in 1967\" width=\"423\" height=\"413\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University\u2019s first graduates, the Class of 1967, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation during Homecoming weekend in September.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s eager to return to campus to reconnect with past friends, classmates and faculty during the September festivities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I returned in 1968 for the first-ever Homecoming and cannot wait to see what this year brings,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auld, who went on to become a professor of consumer studies at Guelph University, has missed some Homecoming celebrations over the years, but always makes sure to return to his old stomping grounds for the University\u2019s milestone events. He enjoyed returning to his alma mater for Brock\u2019s 25th, 40th and 50th anniversary celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auld said his connection to Brock has remained strong over the years, with past friendships and memories made during his time on campus considered a cherished part of his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s founding president, the late Dr. James A. Gibson, mailed Auld a Brock University hood and robe years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wore it proudly to each and every convocation I attended,\u201d Auld said, while reflecting fondly on the gesture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Class of \u201967 has always shown immense pride and loyalty to each other and to the University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were all really good friends,\u201d Auld said, adding he is saddened that many of his classmates and professors are no longer around to share in the celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as the graduates are proud of their connection to their alma mater, Brock is equally proud to call the group of wise, inspirational and educated individuals its first graduating class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University will recognize and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Class of \u201867 during the Alumni Recognition Reception held Saturday, Sept. 16 in Lowenberger Dining Hall.
