{"id":46149,"date":"2017-08-09T16:09:02","date_gmt":"2017-08-09T20:09:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=46149"},"modified":"2017-08-09T16:10:42","modified_gmt":"2017-08-09T20:10:42","slug":"brock-student-researcher-gives-seniors-tech-lesson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/08\/brock-student-researcher-gives-seniors-tech-lesson\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock student researcher gives seniors tech lesson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"page-intro\"><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A therapy traditionally used to aid children with autism spectrum disorder has instead been applied by a Brock graduate student to introduce seniors to technology.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacqueline Pachis, who graduated in June from Applied Disability Studies with her Master of Arts degree, devoted her thesis research to using the principles of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) to help older adults in retirement homes learn to use technology to connect with friends and family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The older adult population, she said, is under-researched when it comes to the use of ABA.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46148\" style=\"width: 282px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46148\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-46148\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Jacqueline-Pachis-RS-849x1050.jpg\" alt=\"Jacqueline Pachis\" width=\"272\" height=\"336\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Recent Brock graduate Jacqueline Pachis devoted her thesis research to using the principles of applied behaviour analysis to help older adults in retirement homes learn to use technology to connect with friends and family.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pachis hoped to address a common misconception in her field \u2014 that ABA can only be used to aid individuals with autism spectrum disorder or other intellectual and developmental disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To conduct her study, Pachis used iPads, purchased with funds granted by Brock\u2019s Council for Research in the Social Sciences (CRISS), to teach three older adults living in a retirement home how to use FaceTime, YouTube and e-mail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese apps were particularly relevant and useful to learn, as they have the potential to enhance social interaction and communication with family and friends,\u201d Pachis said. \u201cThey also provide a source of entertainment, which may help improve quality of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparing methods of instruction was another important component of the project. Pachis offered participants both written instructions and video demonstrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While all three senior participants were more accustomed to following text-based instructions, two soon found that they preferred to learn by video prompting. The third felt the video moved too quickly, whereas the text allowed for self-paced instruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three participants embraced the technology. Those who didn\u2019t already own tablets purchased new ones after the study was completed, and planned to continue using their favourite new apps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll the participants were really fascinated with FaceTime. At first, they couldn&#8217;t believe that you could talk to and see the person through the screen in real time,\u201d Pachis said. \u201cThey also really enjoyed listening to music \u2014 mainly Elvis Presley \u2014 and watching video clips of classic movies on YouTube.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pachis shared her findings at the 43<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> annual convention for the Association for Behavior Analysis International held in May in Colorado. She was honoured with the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior Student Presenter Award from the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her thesis was also recently accepted for publication in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
