{"id":45995,"date":"2017-07-25T16:44:50","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T20:44:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45995"},"modified":"2017-07-25T16:54:01","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T20:54:01","slug":"makerspace-research-draws-visiting-scholars-to-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/makerspace-research-draws-visiting-scholars-to-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Makerspace research draws visiting scholars to Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Makerspaces and their role in the development of digital literacy skills in children are at the centre of a project that recently drew two overseas scholars to Brock.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liz Chesworth and Jamal Lahmar, both of the University of Sheffield in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> South Yorkshire, England, were invited by Brock Education Professor Jennifer Rowsell to spend July in St. Catharines as part of an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0international research project \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/makeyproject.eu\/projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Makerspaces in the early years: Enhancing digital literacy and creativity (MakEY<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time the year is up, five international researchers will have spent time at Brock connecting with researchers, educators and professionals in order to gain new insight into the rising \u2018maker\u2019 culture\u00a0and its role in the development of children\u2019s digital literacy and creative design skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 30-month project is led by Sheffield Professor Jackie Marsh and involves research partnerships stretching across Europe, including Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Romania and the U.K. The project is funded by the EU H2020 Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowsell, Canada Research Chair in Multiliteracies and Director of Brock\u2019s Centre for<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Multiliteracies, is part of the project\u2019s broader international contingent of researchers from Canada, Australia, Colombia, South Africa and the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45997\" style=\"width: 339px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45997\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-45997 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Jennifer-Rowsell-RS-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jennifer Rowsell\" width=\"329\" height=\"329\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock Education Professor Jennifer Rowsell.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Chesworth and Lahmar are at Brock, Rowsell is at Sheffield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chesworth and Lahmar have specific roles in the MakEY project and both made a point of setting up contacts well ahead of their arrival in order to make the most of their four weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An early childhood education lecturer at Sheffield, Chesworth is interested in early childhood play research. She started her stay by visiting Brock\u2019s Rosalind Blauer Centre for Child Care, as well as the Niagara Children\u2019s Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCanada, and North America overall, is far ahead in the makerspace movement of taking traditional making and crafting and blending it with new digital technology,\u201d Chesworth says. \u201cWe see more evidence of makerspaces involving adults.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main idea of the project, she says, is to introduce the skills and disposition of making to children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJamal describes makerspaces as having the potential of making children become \u2018empowered creators\u2019 and I couldn\u2019t agree more with that idea,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lahmar is a full-time lecturer and PhD student whose research is centred on statistical literacy education and, more broadly, research methods teaching. His project role is to collect survey data from the range of participating researchers and stakeholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within a week of arriving, Lahmar was in Toronto to give a presentation about the project at a conference of independent school educators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had a chance to talk with many early-age teachers and all were very positive about the makerspace movement,\u201d he says. \u201cI came away with a sense that there is a lot of scope and alignment about how, in a practical way, teachers can make makerspaces fit with what they are doing in the classroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Rowsell, she has also taken advantage of her time away to talk with international researchers about a funded satellite study she begins in October entitled Maker Literacies.
