{"id":45953,"date":"2017-07-21T10:46:45","date_gmt":"2017-07-21T14:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45953"},"modified":"2018-03-07T09:23:17","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T14:23:17","slug":"incoming-badgers-begin-university-adventure-at-basecamp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/incoming-badgers-begin-university-adventure-at-basecamp\/","title":{"rendered":"Incoming Badgers begin university adventure at BaseCamp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When most people think of university life, rock climbing, backpacking and canoeing aren\u2019t the first activities that come to mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But through Brock\u2019s BaseCamp program, incoming students are transitioned into post-secondary education through a series of nature trips in August exploring Ontario wilderness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trips, each three to five days long, take new Badgers along the Niagara Escarpment and into Ontario provincial parks and various conservation areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The excursions are led by current upper-year Brock students, who share their own experiences and advice to help new students feel more confident and connected to the University going into their first year. All the while participants bond over their outdoor experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BaseCamp\u2019s unique model has been adopted as a best practice by other Canadian universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-founder and Recreation and Leisure Studies Professor Tim O&#8217;Connell said students learn about the cultural and natural history of where they are travelling, as well as how to follow the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/brock-experts-want-you-to-leave-no-trace-when-exploring-parks-canada-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leave No Trace principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany BaseCamp participants appreciate learning how to travel lightly through our provincial and national parks,\u201d says O\u2019Connell. \u201cIn fact, many of them apply these principles to their everyday lives when they are back on campus or at home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrating these basic Leave No Trace ideas into outdoor recreation programs has become commonplace as more and more people are active outside.
