{"id":45899,"date":"2017-07-20T08:42:38","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T12:42:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45899"},"modified":"2017-07-25T15:16:27","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T19:16:27","slug":"making-the-leap-to-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/making-the-leap-to-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Making the LEAP to Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tejal Saini is leaping right into her experience at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The incoming Labour Studies student recently spent two days on campus, exploring her soon to be home away from home as part of LEAP \u2014 the most comprehensive of Brock&#8217;s transition programming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saini got an in-depth look at university life, staying overnight in residence and familiarizing herself with the campus alongside eight other students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy first impression of the University is that it\u2019s smaller than others, but that\u2019s what I liked most about it,\u201d the Brampton resident said. \u201cClasses are more personal and professors are approachable, which was reaffirmed for me when I attended LEAP.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45901\" style=\"width: 403px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45901\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-45901\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/LEAP-Tejal-Saini-1280x750.jpg\" alt=\"Tejal Saini\" width=\"393\" height=\"230\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45901\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Incoming Brock student Tejal Saini found a recent LEAP session beneficial to her coming September start at the University.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEAP is one of three summer transition programs \u201cdesigned to help students feel confident and comfortable before they start classes in September,\u201d said Megan Brown, Community Engagement Co-ordinator and programming leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe provide a small, intimate experience for incoming students to have an enhanced understanding of services on campus, while at the same time making close connections with their peers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the overnight stay, the two-day program includes dinner and a scavenger hunt in downtown St. Catharines, a lesson on the using the local transit system and a community engagement initiative in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students also get one-on-one time with campus leaders to answer any questions or concerns they may have, which, for Saini, was imperative to her future at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can get a lot of information online but when you talk with someone who is more experienced, they give you more detailed insight into what you can expect,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are many things that I\u2019m looking forward to now that I know about all of these opportunities at Brock, like participating in leadership workshops and joining different clubs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, Saini is counting down the days until she sets foot on campus again in the fall. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was very nervous about coming to a new school in a new city with so many new people, but after attending LEAP, it reaffirmed my decision about coming here in September. I\u2019m really looking forward to it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spaces are still available for the following LEAP dates: July 22 to 23 and 29 to 30, and Aug. 9 and 17 (day only).
