{"id":45894,"date":"2017-07-20T08:13:43","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T12:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45894"},"modified":"2017-07-20T15:52:51","modified_gmt":"2017-07-20T19:52:51","slug":"thousands-of-new-badgers-to-get-smart-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/thousands-of-new-badgers-to-get-smart-start\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of new Badgers to get Smart Start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s Smart Start program aims to help incoming students walk onto campus with confidence this fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout July and August, around 2,000 students will come through Brock\u2019s longest running transition program as they begin to integrate themselves into university life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur objective is that students leave Smart Start prepared and relaxed for their first day of school, and that guests feel confident in knowing that Brock is the best place for them to be,\u201d said Courtney Keogh, Recruitment and Liaison Officer \u2014 Smart Start and Group Visits.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45897\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45897\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-45897\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Smart-Start-McLeod-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Melody Wade and Trent McLeod\" width=\"365\" height=\"274\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45897\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Incoming Brock students Melody Wade and Trent McLeod participated in a recent Smart Start session.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The full-day program offers a one-stop-shop experience as attendees hear from department representatives and attend student services presentations to have their immediate questions answered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students learn how to use their new ID card and finalize their course registration with the help of Brock\u2019s academic advisors, while also becoming informed about student finance and awards, housing and things to do in Niagara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are one of the only universities in Canada that does a full-day program with all of these services immediately on hand,\u201d Keogh said. \u201cProgramming dates run later into August \u2014 something new for us this year \u2014 in order to accommodate more students who are away for internships, work or travel during the summer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incoming students Trent McLeod and Melody Wade, both of Niagara Falls, were familiar with Brock\u2019s campus before Smart Start began, but still found the summer transition program helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt eases the anxiety of transitioning from just working the last year to going back to school,\u201d said McLeod, who took a year off after graduating from \u00c9cole secondaire catholique Jean-Vanier in Welland.
