{"id":45860,"date":"2017-07-18T14:10:42","date_gmt":"2017-07-18T18:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45860"},"modified":"2017-07-18T16:48:43","modified_gmt":"2017-07-18T20:48:43","slug":"hamilton-campus-tech-whiz-receives-national-acclaim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/hamilton-campus-tech-whiz-receives-national-acclaim\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamilton campus tech whiz receives national acclaim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Dino Giancola describes his role as a computer and media technician at Brock\u2019s Hamilton campus, a common saying in the world of entertainment springs to mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe show must go on,\u201d said Giancola, who has previously worked in theatre around the world. \u201cI think of every class as a performance. It should feel and appear seamless and well-rehearsed, never a technological struggle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giancola was recognized this spring with a national award for his contributions in supporting technology and the classroom experience for Brock\u2019s Faculty of Education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canconnected.com\/2017-innovator-award-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 CONNECT conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held in Niagara Falls in April, he received the CONNECTed Innovator Award in the technician category. CONNECT is billed as Canada\u2019s largest education technology conference with upwards of 2,000 participants coming together to share best practices and ideas about education technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giancola said he was humbled to find out supervisors Shannon Welbourn and Kyle Tuck had submitted his nomination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I received a \u2018Congratulations, you\u2019re a winner!\u2019 e-mail, I immediately deleted it,\u201d he quipped. \u201cBut something in the message caught my eye that this just might be legit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giancola considers himself fortunate that technology has always come naturally to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think that this stems from a simple, natural curiosity for how things work, whether natural or man-made,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery day is different, which keeps things interesting and \u2018fresh\u2019 feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He initially combined his lifelong interest in technology with a music degree in hopes of working at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forefront of digital audio production and editing, providing technical advice to a range of artists, from filmmakers to performers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That background has factored into his role supporting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">students, faculty and staff for the past two-and-a-half years <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at Brock\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hamilton Instructional Resource Centre (IRC)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giancola is responsible for delivering and maintaining media and computing equipment and other educational technologies and providing computer support and assistance in the IRC and computer labs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuck, a systems Administrator and technician at the Hamilton campus, describes his talented colleague as being innovative and passionate about classroom technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDino closely watches technology trends, particularly those relating to education, and assists faculty and instructors to model K-12 classroom tech integration for the teacher candidates,\u201d he said. \u201cHe was critical to the implementation of the Makerspace within the Faculty\u2019s Instructional Resource Centre that introduces teacher education candidates to a wide variety of teaching resources and strategies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giancola has made a difference in the learning experience of individual students. For example, last year, he and Tuck collaborated to come up with a technical solution that would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/04\/tech-used-in-the-classroom-to-allow-student-to-attend-remotely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enable a student with a medical issue to participate in classes from home via video conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has also developed and delivered workshops on 3D printing and 3D design to teacher education students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m enthusiastic about education, especially since the advent of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and the Internet. The marriage of technology and education are inextricably linked and enjoy a symbiotic relationship, \u201d Giancola said. \u201cThe faculty and staff are intelligent, thoughtful and very appreciative. We\u2019re always trying to give students the best experience possible.
