{"id":45842,"date":"2017-07-17T12:17:35","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T16:17:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45842"},"modified":"2017-07-17T16:43:07","modified_gmt":"2017-07-17T20:43:07","slug":"grand-opening-set-for-new-cycling-path-near-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/grand-opening-set-for-new-cycling-path-near-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand opening set for new cycling path near Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travelling to Brock by bike or on foot just got a bit easier \u2014 and a lot safer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work on the new Decew and Merrittville multi-use pathway has been completed, providing a safe route to get to the University from one of the most popular off-campus residential neighbourhoods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, the Government of Ontario, City of Thorold, Niagara Region and Brock University <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/04\/improved-cycling-route-planned-for-around-brock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced a partnership to build a network of bike lanes and paths that would stretch from the Confederation Heights neighbourhood to the Brock campus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement followed lobbying efforts by the Brock University Students\u2019 Union for improved cycling infrastructure near campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first phase of the project began in 2016 with Decew Road reconstructed from Richmond Street to Merrittville Highway. Work continued this past April with a multi-use path and improved lighting installed on the highway between Decew Road and Sir Isaac Brock Way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An officially opening for the new pathway will be held Wednesday, July 19 at 3 p.m. outside of Niagara Region headquarters \u2014 on the southeast corner of Sir Isaac Brock Way and Merrittville Highway. The ceremony will be followed by a bike ride for cyclists of all ages.
