{"id":45694,"date":"2017-07-12T16:11:16","date_gmt":"2017-07-12T20:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45694"},"modified":"2018-07-17T13:43:08","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T17:43:08","slug":"music-composed-by-brock-prof-for-dance-opera-about-residential-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/music-composed-by-brock-prof-for-dance-opera-about-residential-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Music composed by Brock prof for dance-opera about residential schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spy D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch wanted to fully experience a new dance-opera production about Canada\u2019s residential schools<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that premiered recently at Toronto\u2019s Luminato Festival.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He did that by going seat by seat by seat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At each of the four performances of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bearing<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, staged in the round at the Canadian Opera Company from June 22 to 24, the indigenous composer and Assistant Professor in Brock\u2019s Faculty of Education carefully selected different seats around the theatre to watch the musicians, dancers and actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>All the while, nearby audience members were unaware of the connection\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch, a Dora-nominated writer and composer, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had to the production. Last year, he and his composing partner Catherine Magowan were commissioned by <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bearing<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> director Michael Greyeyes to write original music, titled \u201c<em>Sojourn<\/em>,\u201d for the production\u2019s third and final act. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his multiple views of the performance only deepened his sense of privilege in helping shape such a powerful and important story. Productions staged in the round have audience members placed on at least three sides of the stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bearing<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a very complex production,\u201d he says. \u201cThere is a lot to take in and I wanted to see it all from different vantage points. Some storylines, depending on where I was sitting, affected me differently from one performance to another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staging it in the round was unique for me as a musician. It gave actors, dancers and musicians an equal playing field, and having live music made it very affecting for the audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch describes <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bearing<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a future generational exploration of the legacy of residential schools on one family. The production features nine dancers\/actors, including three who are indigenous, as well as indigenous opera singer Marion Newman, a chorus and an orchestra of classical musicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The music in the first two acts is set to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bach\u2019s Motet &#8220;<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesu, meine Freude&#8221;\u00a0BWV 227<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and Claude Vivier\u2019s \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wo Bist du Licht<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To begin their creative process, D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch and Magowan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attended early production workshops to get a feel for the tone of the first two acts. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They knew their Act 3 composition would feature the mezzo-soprano voice of Newman, in the role of Sojourner, and the percussion and strings sections of the orchestra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We wanted our music to give the characters space to move through as Sojourner bundled the various feelings, such as sorrow and pain, that the characters have been wrestling with throughout the story,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says. \u201cWe envisioned a voice coming from empowerment. She is a messenger. She puts forward a call as a symbol to represent empowerment, resilience and resistance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes the audience experience as moving, with a range of emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA mix of feelings is a good sign. It\u2019s a good place to put people, because this is a confusing and complex issue,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch says.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThere are terrifically strong responses to the production because it is dealing with something that has an ugly history. The production opened more questions and I believe that\u2019s a good thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00e9nomm\u00e9-Welch has a number of other projects on the go. He is completing a chamber work with the goal of presenting it next year in a public workshop presentation and this November he will<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0premiere new work for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voice\/actor, contrabassoon and piano at the Native Earth Performing Arts\u2019 Weesageechak Festival.
