{"id":45676,"date":"2017-07-11T14:27:39","date_gmt":"2017-07-11T18:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45676"},"modified":"2017-08-29T16:07:09","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T20:07:09","slug":"join-brock-at-popular-niagara-events-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/join-brock-at-popular-niagara-events-this-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock joins the community at more Niagara events this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\">Badger pride will be out in full force this summer, as Brock extends its renowned student and campus experience to several Niagara-area events.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The list of local festivities the University is sponsoring continues to grow, with red-shirted volunteers set to drum up excitement across the region throughout the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of Brock\u2019s many strengths is community engagement, which happens on multiple levels throughout the University and in the community,\u201d said Gord Hunchak, Associate Vice-President, External Relations. \u201cWe excel in engaging with the community in experiential learning opportunities, co-op placements, research projects, academic partnerships and youth camps, to name just a few examples. By extending our involvement into major events throughout the region, our bond with the community as &#8220;Niagara\u2019s University&#8221; is further strengthened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past few months, Brock was present at several local events, including In the Soil Arts Festival, Niagara VegFest, the Rankin Cancer Run and the CSSRA Regatta. The University also welcomed the public to tour its arts facilities as part of Doors Open Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming up this weekend, Brock is a gold-level sponsor at the popular\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pelhamsummerfest.ca\/events\/saturday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelham Summerfest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which runs from July 13-16 in downtown Fonthill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the event\u2019s Saturday Street Festival on Pelham Street, Boomer will be mingling with the crowd and Brock ambassadors will be handing out fun summer-themed swag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University, in partnership with Brock Sports, is sponsoring the event\u2019s Teen Zone at Marlene Stewart Streit Park Saturday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., bringing in sports equipment \u2014 and fidget spinners \u2014 and introducing visitors to ultimate frisbee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also this weekend, Brock is sponsoring\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/friendlybynature.com\/happening-at-the-forty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happening at the Forty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 a Grimsby street festival that runs from July 13 to 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later this month, the University is expanding its community efforts beyond Niagara, sponsoring\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/hamiltonfringe.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hamilton Fringe Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 and its Youth Access passes \u2014 from July 20-30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The passes are printed and distributed to local schools and community groups in the Hamilton area, giving youths aged 18 and under access to free tickets to Fringe shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event, which takes place in downtown Hamilton, features more than 300 performances, including musicals, dance, comedies, magic shows, dramas and family entertainment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representatives from Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts will be at the festival\u2019s kick-off event on July 19 at the Lincoln Alexander Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The month will conclude with a splash as Brock does its part to support\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wellandfloatfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welland Floatfest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will have participants set sail on their inflatables in the recreational canal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University is the official volunteer sponsor for the July 30 event, where an attempt will be made to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest line of water inflatables.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock ambassadors will also be on scene through a partnership with Student Life and Community Experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these events, and many others, form a lead-up to Brock\u2019s biggest community event of the year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/homecoming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homecoming weekend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sept. 15-17, where everyone is invited to join Brock students, alumni, faculty and staff in celebrating the start of another academic year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Brock experience is like no other, and participating in these events allows us to bring the Brock experience out to the community,\u201d Hunchak said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The University will also be participating in a series of community events throughout August.
