{"id":45659,"date":"2017-07-10T13:11:53","date_gmt":"2017-07-10T17:11:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45659"},"modified":"2017-07-20T14:58:40","modified_gmt":"2017-07-20T18:58:40","slug":"student-initiative-sending-textbooks-to-ghana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/student-initiative-sending-textbooks-to-ghana\/","title":{"rendered":"Student initiative sending textbooks to Ghana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"page-intro\"><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evans Boadi knows first-hand how difficult it can be to further your education when you don\u2019t have access to the resources you need.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock Mathematics and Statistics master\u2019s student began his post-secondary career at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in his home nation of Ghana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A frequent visitor to KNUST&#8217;s library, Boadi found out that some books recommended by lecturers were no where to be found.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45660\" style=\"width: 517px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45660\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-45660 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Books-for-Ghana-2-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Books for Ghana\" width=\"507\" height=\"338\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CPI Resource Co-ordinator Wanda Gilmore, Mathematics and Statistics graduate student Evans Boadi and Campus Store Service Assistant Leah McBeaudry sort through some of the many textbooks donated by the store to be shipped to a school in Ghana.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he began his studies at Brock in fall of 2016, he began wondering what students do with their textbooks once their classes have come to an end \u2014 and whether there was potential to give them a second life overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearing many are sold or even donated, he started to inquire whether interest existed on campus to see some books shipped to Ghana for students in need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boadi\u2019s vision was to offer a helping hand to students back home in gaining the best possible education available to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation caught wind of the positive project, support was immediately offered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;CPI is happy to contribute to initiatives that make a difference with respect to global education, and when this project was brought to us by a very motivated and persuasive graduate student, we were eager to help him succeed,&#8221; said CPI Director Jill Grose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CPI began collecting books from staff and put Boadi in touch with the Campus Store, which supplied him with books no longer suitable for sale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between CPI and the store, more than 250 books have been collected on a range of topics such as math, business, health sciences, chemistry, political science and nursing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All books provided by the Campus Store were editions that could no longer be sold for current Brock courses or returned by the store to the vendor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe recognized that we were in the unique position where our loss had the potential to be KNUST&#8217;s gain,\u201d said Leah McBeaudry, Campus Store Service Assistant. \u201cIt would allow them the opportunity to attain quality academic material they wouldn&#8217;t otherwise have access to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boadi was both touched and overwhelmed by the instant support he encountered on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing at Brock, you have the chance to be a part of a community, to see the spirit of the community,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m inspired by that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His plan is to ship the books to KNUST by the end of the month, so they will arrive to the school in Africa prior to the start of the fall term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is paying out of his own pocket to ship the books, though donations to support those costs are welcomed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d like to collect more books, but it\u2019s getting expensive,\u201d Boadi said.
