{"id":45646,"date":"2017-07-07T08:00:53","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T12:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45646"},"modified":"2017-07-07T15:33:24","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T19:33:24","slug":"faculty-of-education-celebrates-outstanding-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/faculty-of-education-celebrates-outstanding-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty of Education celebrates outstanding students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\">Those who know Henry Nguyen describe him as a thoughtful and dedicated 21st century educator who is skilled at creating engaging and innovative learning experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nguyen, who received his Education degree at Brock\u2019s recent Spring Convocation, took one of the Faculty\u2019s top student honours as recipient of this year\u2019s Dean&#8217;s Medal for Education. The award acknowledges Nguyen for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">academic and professional excellence in the Teacher Education Program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hamilton resident is among dozens of graduating and current students to be recognized with 2017 Faculty of Education awards. He is also the winner of the Don Galbraith Award from the Science Teachers&#8217; Association of Ontario (Junior\/Intermediate) for his <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exemplary commitment to the teacher education science program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most recently, Nguyen was involved in setting up a school-based Makerspace program for young students to learn about electronics and coding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love sharing all I have learned through my education and I believe that my knowledge can help my students acquire meaningful experience and succeed in their future endeavors,\u201d Nguyen says. \u201cI have learned so much about teaching pedagogies and all of the different elements of being an educator from my professors. They made my experience at Brock very meaningful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual awards celebrate student success as part of the Faculty\u2019s shared values of teaching, learning and scholarship, says David Siegel, Interim Dean of Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur students thrive and excel in an environment in which they take their place within a community that is passionate about teaching and lifelong learning,\u201d he says. \u00a0\u201cTheir enthusiasm and love for teaching is inspiring. We\u2019re proud of their achievements and we are excited about their future success as teachers who are committed to making a difference in today\u2019s 21st century classrooms.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nadine Krikke, another double award winner, has some packing to do. After completing the first observation day through my Brock placement, I knew I had chosen the right career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Award-winning student Jennifer Dockx says she has had an inspiring academic journey at Brock. Dockx is the winner of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anadian Federation of University Women (Hamilton Branch) Award. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The criteria for this award is demonstration of excellent potential in teaching and involvement in community affairs. She is also the winner of the Child and Youth Studies Book Prize and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elementary Teachers&#8217; Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Award<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45648\" style=\"width: 265px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45648\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-45648 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Jennifer-Dockx-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Jennifer Dockx\" width=\"255\" height=\"191\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jennifer Dockx is the winner of the Canadian Federation of University Women (Hamilton Branch) Award.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI enjoyed my classes and surrounded myself with friends who shared my passion for education,\u201d says the Tillsonburg resident. \u201cWhen I compare the individual that I was five years ago to the person I am now, I smile and consider myself very fortunate.
