{"id":45577,"date":"2017-07-04T16:02:02","date_gmt":"2017-07-04T20:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45577"},"modified":"2018-12-20T11:41:58","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T16:41:58","slug":"tesl-canada-honours-applied-linguistics-prof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/tesl-canada-honours-applied-linguistics-prof\/","title":{"rendered":"TESL Canada honours Applied Linguistics prof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\">Applied Linguistics Professor Ron Thomson\u00a0was recently recognized by\u00a0TESL Canada, the national federation of English language teachers, with the Honorary Life Member Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual award, established in 1998 to honour outstanding service and leadership, was presented to Thomson at the organization\u2019s national conference held in Niagara Falls in June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TESL Canada President Joy Lin Salzberg remarked that Thomson \u201ccontinuously and assiduously devoted more than seven years of service to the (organization&#8217;s)\u00a0executive committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45579\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45579\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-45579 size-seenandheard\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ron-Thomson-1-300x384.jpg\" alt=\"Ron Thomson\" width=\"300\" height=\"384\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock Applied Linguistics Professor Ron Thomson was recently honoured by TESL Canada, the national federation of English Language teachers, with the Honorary Life Member Award.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRon has been instrumental in navigating TESL Canada through some of the most challenging periods of its history,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award\u00a0comes at the completion of Thomson&#8217;s tenure as past president of the organization, following many years of service and leadership. Since 2005, he has served on the Board of Directors in multiple elected roles, including secretary to the executive committee, vice-president and president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thomson<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0chaired the committee that oversees TESL Canada\u2019s journal \u2014 an internationally recognized, peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes research relevant to the Canadian language learning context. Also, as chair of the governance committee for three years, he developed many policies and procedures to help improve consistency across administrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But perhaps his greatest contribution was finding a home for TESL Canada in Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As president, Thomson led the charge to complete the organization\u2019s first strategic plan in many years, and succeeded in hiring a permanent staff member in the nation\u2019s capital. This ensured TESL Canada is represented at meetings with the leadership of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada \u2014 the primary federal department related to the organization&#8217;s\u00a0sector. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the past, not being a regular, participating member at this table really limited TESL Canada\u2019s ability to contribute our expertise to government policy, especially language training for immigrants,\u201d Thomson said.
