{"id":45570,"date":"2017-07-04T16:10:06","date_gmt":"2017-07-04T20:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45570"},"modified":"2017-08-29T16:07:16","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T20:07:16","slug":"brock-prof-spent-canada-day-swearing-in-new-citizens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/brock-prof-spent-canada-day-swearing-in-new-citizens\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock prof spent Canada Day swearing in new citizens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"page-intro\"><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most people celebrated Canada Day with fireworks and family barbecues, Dorothy Griffiths spent July 1 providing a warm welcome to a group of new citizens.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock Child and Youth Studies professor was the volunteer presiding official at a Niagara-on-the-Lake citizenship ceremony, where she swore in 19 individuals as they officially became Canadians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful opportunity to share a historic moment in the lives of these families,\u201d said Griffiths, who first started volunteering in the role two years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven though I\u2019ve done it before, this year being Canada\u2019s 150th made it even more spectacular,\u201d she said. \u201cEveryone was excited to be getting their citizenship on this particular day of all days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ceremonies are typically conducted by a citizenship judge, but volunteers, who must be Order of Canada recipients, are called in to assist when multiple ceremonies are scheduled for the same day in the same geographic area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2011\/07\/professor-to-receive-the-order-of-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Griffiths received the Order of Canada, the country\u2019s highest honour, in 2011<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saturday\u2019s ceremony \u2014 with a packed standing room-only crowd \u2014 left her feeling inspired in a way no event has before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor me, you couldn\u2019t feel any more Canadian than being part of that,\u201d she said. \u201cKnowing these individuals have given up their lives somewhere else, many of them struggling to get here, it\u2019s touching.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Griffiths was moved as she watched children, adults and seniors take the oath that solidified their status as Canadians. In addition to the family and friends of those being sworn in, the room was filled with people who came to renew their citizenship to mark the July 1 holiday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Griffiths found inspiration from one woman in particular, who was transfixed on her every word as she spoke about the rights and responsibilities the new citizens must take on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe kept nodding and smiling. You could just tell she was enjoying the moment and realizing the freedoms and opportunities that she has here in Canada,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Griffiths hopes those in attendance walked away feeling welcomed and aware that the country\u2019s diversity is something all Canadians should take pride in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe all come from different backgrounds and we all have a different history, but we now share a common future,\u201d she said. \u201cCanada\u2019s prosperity, Canada\u2019s freedoms, opportunities for peace \u2014 all these things that we treasure are now part of their lives too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Griffiths hopes to participate in more citizenship ceremonies following her retirement from Brock next June.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45575\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45575\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-45575 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Dorothy-Griffiths-2-1050x637.jpg\" alt=\"Dorothy Griffiths citizenship ceremony\" width=\"1050\" height=\"637\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock Child and Youth Studies Professor Dorothy Griffiths, centre, spent Canada Day swearing in new citizens during a special ceremony in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
