{"id":45537,"date":"2017-06-28T15:41:44","date_gmt":"2017-06-28T19:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45537"},"modified":"2017-06-28T15:56:28","modified_gmt":"2017-06-28T19:56:28","slug":"cycling-scientist-looks-to-improve-performance-for-amateur-and-world-class-riders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/cycling-scientist-looks-to-improve-performance-for-amateur-and-world-class-riders\/","title":{"rendered":"Cycling scientist looks to improve performance for amateur and world-class riders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"page-intro\"><b><\/b><span class=\"dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a 16-year-old high school basketball player, Stephen Cheung felt he spent far more time sitting on the bench than he did on the court.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his desire to get in the game and improve his athletic abilities, he remained on the sidelines watching with envy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of that changed the day he turned on the TV to watch the men&#8217;s cycling road race at the 1984 Summer Olympics.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-seenandheard wp-image-45539\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Cycling-Science-Cover-300x428.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"428\" \/> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheung watched transfixed as top cyclist Steve Bauer crossed the finish line to win a silver medal for Canada. He had found a new sport to love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe L.A. Olympics was the first time I realized anyone raced bikes and here was Bauer, this local boy from St. Catharines, winning the first Olympic medal in road cycling for Canada,\u201d says Cheung, who is now a professor in Brock\u2019s Department of Kinesiology. \u201cSuddenly, I had found this sport, where there was no coach telling me to stay on the bench.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, 33 years later, Cheung is a competitive athlete, respected internationally for his research into the science behind cycling performance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday, June 30, Cheung will launch his new book, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cycling Science<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is co-edited with Mikel Zabala from the Movistar professional cycling team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The launch and signing will take place at 8 p.m. following the Canada 150 party at Liberty!
