{"id":45475,"date":"2017-06-23T16:22:27","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T20:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=45475"},"modified":"2017-06-26T10:53:06","modified_gmt":"2017-06-26T14:53:06","slug":"classics-students-explore-sites-of-ancient-greece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/06\/classics-students-explore-sites-of-ancient-greece\/","title":{"rendered":"Classics students explore sites of ancient Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"page-intro dropcap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of Brock students recently found themselves surrounded by the landscapes described in their textbooks during their own odyssey in Greece.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Classics class, led by Professor Allison Glazebrook, returned to campus this week after spending two weeks experiencing the monuments, artifacts and architecture of Greece<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study tour, which brought 22 students abroad, included Athens, Marathon, Delphi, Olympia and Sparta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring ancient sites and seeing artifacts in person is meant to add a depth to learning not otherwise possible in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It allows students to put the archaeology of Greece in a much wider context, including how the sites have been changed through history and how they are experienced by modern tourists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe old and the new exist side by side here in Greece,\u201d said student Sarah Murray. \u201cThe past runs into the present in a state that must struggle to meet the needs of its living citizens while preserving the legacy of its ancestors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to travelling overseas, the students had two weeks of class at Brock, during which they researched specific artifacts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt prepared me for looking at artifacts with an analytical eye instead of with touristic excitement only,\u201d said third-year Classics student Keegan Bruce, who found the research helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each student was responsible for presenting a site on the study tour. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cViewing monuments and works of art first hand is more engaging than reading about them in a textbook,\u201d Glazebrook said. \u201cYou can examine all angles of an artifact and have many other examples to compare it to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Bruce, the trip provided a \u201cmuch better understanding of how the pieces of art worked in space,\u201d she said. \u201cFor example, I was never impressed by the chariot rider bronze in photos, but seeing it in the National Museum struck me dumb. The tension, movement and detail of the piece was overwhelming and can&#8217;t be taken from a photograph.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travelling as a university group allowed students to visit archaeological sites and facilities not always accessible to the general public, such as the Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory for Archaeological Science in Athens. Students were given a tour of the lab, where they learned about research projects focused on human osteology, faunal analysis, organic residue, and various soil, stone, ceramic, cement and plant materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study tour allows students to experience ancient monuments in the geographic and climate context, which helps students better understand ancient Greek culture and history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travelling across the landscape drove home why ancient Greece developed as it did,\u201d Glazebrook said. \u201cClimbing up Mount Lykaion to view the sanctuary of Zeus really tested our limits, but was one of the more memorable experiences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students recorded their experience before and during the tour <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/blogs\/brock-odyssey-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on a class blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The course also incorporated social media, with students choosing the hashtag #brockodyssey2017 and taking over the Faculty <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/brockhumanities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/brockhumanities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s Department of Classics is the only one in Canada to offer credit for annual study trips to the Mediterranean. The trips alternate between a study tour and an archaeological dig.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent study tour destinations have included Turkey in 2013, led by Professor Fanny Dolansky, and Italy in 2011, led by Professor Katharine von Stackelberg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students\u2019 Brock University Archaeological Society and the Classics department offer bursaries to help offset the cost of travelling overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students interested in future study tours should talk to their academic advisor.
